These students at a university in Montreal decided that it would be funny to dress in blackface, hold up a monkey and chant "smoke more weed" at a Jamaican athlete.


What the hell!?


Does anyone here think that this is even slightly acceptable? I don't understand how anyone could think that this is okay.

 

Were they there in support of this Jamaican player?

It sounds normal to me, for a bunch of jocks on weed.

In school I always made sure I had plenty of paper and a couple extra pencils. Then the lazy jocks who were too lazy to bring their stuff to class would use mine, then they called me a geek. Who's the geek?

 

Speaks poorly for the students. Reacting dignifies it and empowers them. Nice that they are willing to show the world what morons they really are.

It just goes to show how far we haven't progressed. I'm embarrassed that people spewing that type of shit are afforded a way of spreading their verbal excrement.

It isn't at all funny or acceptable- it's sad.

I used to work cameras for the once a year, Royal Bank shindig in Calgary.
They usually have a theme and that year it was The Olympics. Each branch was encouraged to dress up.

Well, of course the Jamaican Bobsled theme was gonna come up. One branch did it right - a funny and tasteful costuming. Another branch came in black face - it was revolting. I was so embarrassed for so many reasons, the least of which was that the guest MC for the night was Shelley-Ann Brown, a women's bobsled medalist of Jamaican descent.

It was just awful.

 

I won't even watch the video. Someone should drop those guys off in harlem dressed like that.

I don't get the big problem with black face, in and of itself.

I can understand if it's derisive in nature, or if you're using white actors to fill colored roles *cough* Prince of Persia, Avatar: the Last Airbender. And of course, both of those apply to most historical uses of it.

However, the monkey comment, and the attitudes of at least some of the group, was clearly racist.

 

That is wrong on so many levels. Why would anyone think this is a good idea? I'm guessing those kids are spoiled frat guys that probably haven't been around very many black people in their lives.

And what the fuck is up with the monkey? I mean, even if you think its okay to wear black face and even if you think its okay to exploit Jamaican culture and show you know nothing about it by equating it to smoking weed.....why the hell would you bring a monkey into it?

on the one hand, i think political correctness is retarded and that you should be allowed to say/wear/do pretty much anything that doesn't directly harm someone else. that said, i don't see how anyone in the civilized world could possibly expect what they did to not create problems.
