Ever notice the biggest hits are movies based on tragic facts? Now World Trade Center is comming out, lots of money to collect off of other dying.
Maybe we're all sadomaschists deep down Humans do enjoy seeing tragic events, or hearing about them, not that we are sick or derranged for being curious, it's just human nature I beleive.
Atleast this is 5 years later. Not as bad as that country singer that wrote a song about it within months of it happening and made millions. I remember hearing people say things like, "Wow. I'm impressed that he would make a song like this for people." Puh-lease. Impressed? He knew the public would eat it up, and it boosted his sales to numbers higher than he ever should've achieved. I think this sort of thing is rediculous, but the public supports it, so, so be it.
I think it all depends on how they portray the event. If they do it respectfully, then why not? If it is done in the right way it can do a lot of good for the families of the victims to see the story told in a respectful manner that does justice to the lives that were sacrificed that day.
I think it's so incredibly lame that the movie industry glamourizes tragic events like war and recently this whole World Trade Center tragedy. It's absolutely pathetic. Although what's more pathetic is the people who spend money on it... clearly there's a market out there of people who have no problem in helping the industry glorify death and tragedy.
we ARE all POTENTIALY 'sadomasochists' at heart. along with a whole bunch of other things. there are cheep shots that are ways that bring an audience to a story and the entertainment industry is about exploiting this. no real surprises there. what people forget in all this coercive homoginizing is that for each of us there are far greater gratifictions. there just also seem at the moment to be vested intrests in encouraging us to forget that there are. the kinds of stories we see and tell are indeed a part of the cycle of motivations. not in isolation, but none the less a part. why do people seek gratification in destructive ways? because we've been brainwashed into denying it in more creative and constructive ones. and the dominant beliefs are by no means innocent of the part they play in doing so. =^^= .../\...
A large percentage of the money grossed by the film should be donated to the families of the victims and also to the construction of the memorial being built in the honor of the victims.
This movie looks like a piece of overhyped, emotionally-charged garbage. I cannot comprehend anyone who would want to see a movie like that. All they do it take the world trade center "attacks" and throw in some overly-emotional backstory and call it a movie. Who wants to watch that when you could watch a well-made movie with a good story and good actors? Pirates of the Caribbean anyone? I went to see Dead Man's Chest the other day, and after having seen it, I feel that playing a preview for the WTC movie before it came on is an insult to such a great film.
Tragic facts? What are the "facts" regarding the trade center attacks other than "it was carried out by 19 Arab hijackers with boxcutters and orchestrated by some guy in a cave in Afghanistan who's on dialysis... all because they hate us for our freedom." Yes, I am being sarcastic.
Then again, it looks like Stone may have stealthfully sneaked some hidden truth into the film after all: http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/august2006/010806worldtradecenter.htm
