Bibi Fatima was India's first female Sufi saint, who lived in the thirteenth century, and who was praised by her male contemporaries for the spiritual heights she attained during her lifetime. She was hailed as the Rabia of Delhi and was the adopted sister of Baba Farid, a famous mystic.

A shrine was built for her in Delhi and which is visited by Muslims and people of other religions too for the auspiciousness associated with it. This is one of the very few sufi shrines where women are welcome.

Nizamuddin, a famous Sufi saint and contemporary of Bibi Fatima, praised Bibi in glowing terms...

“When a lion emerges out of the forest, nobody asks if it is male or female; the children of Adam must obey and show respect to all human beings, whether male or female. I have met her and she was a great woman."

A great saying of Bibi Fatima...

“The saints will cast away both worldly and religious blessings to give a piece of bread or a drink of water to someone in need… this state is something one cannot obtain by one hundred thousand fasts and prayers.”
