anyone have any suggestions for keeping cats out of my veggie patch? i've shoo-ed them out, ripped up a separate patch of earth for them to dig in (which they completely ignore) and sprayed them with the garden hose.....and they just keep coming back and messing up my rows!!!! any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

What's wrong with cats in a garden? One of my gardens has three cats that live there, and they don't cause any real problems.

my cat's are tearing apart the rows and killing my plants! if they didn't hurt the plants, i wouldn't mind them being there but they just can't seem to leave them alone. does anyone know if there are any plants that they dont' like that i can put around the edges to deter them?

Cats are a nuisance in my neighborhood. I've been slowly picking them off with my pellet gun. You work so hard to create a nice garden and the neighbors breed cats. 1 shot 1 kill, same with rabbits.

he he he. you sound like someone else i know. unfortunitly it's not an option here because, well, they're MY cats and i could never bring myself to hurt them. guess i'll just have to keep spraying them with the hose. hopefully that will get the point across eventually. lol

Cats can spread disease in their poop and they tear things up. They are horrible for gardens. You can spread moth balls AWAY from your plants (they will kill your plants if they get in the way of their water supply) around the garden. Cats hate the smell. Also, there are these little prickle things you put in the dirt that the damn cats won't walk on. If you have a large garden this can get expensive.

I've had cats using my rose garden for a litter box. I was pregnant at the time, and didn't really want to blind my fetus with toxoplasmosis, so I had my dh use the moth balls. The cat's shit all around my roses was DISGUSTING!!!! IMO, cats belong in the house. For their own protection, as well as the well being of other plants and animals in the area.

There were people in our area who just let their cats run free. They were having kittens (most of whom died) all over the neighborhood, getting hit by cars, destroying property, getting caught in people's motors in their cars ect. When these people finally moved it got much better. In fact, we have now been seeing LOTS of song birds we never saw before. Outdoor cats are the biggest threat to songbirds in most areas. I am so glad those damn cats are gone. There are still a few, but I have old shoes to throw! And a box of moth balls left.

I have heard that spreading human hair around the garden deters them. Never tried it so I don't know for sure. Don't have that problem around here because we have so many rules. I swear I haven't seen a cat wandering around in ages. Too bad.

I think the human hair things is for rabbits, deer and other herbivores. It doesn't work with carnivores. They aren't as afraid of humans.

Cats don't like anything citrus. Place a few sliced lemons/oranges around your plants. This should work, Or get a dog:)

this may sound a bit wierd but here goes, is there any zoos near you? if the answer is yes go phone them and ask them if u can have a little bit of lion poo, told u it was weird BUT where lions are bigger nastier preditors than them they wont go near it cause of the scent.

it does achally work im not taking the piss of anything lol, if the answer is no then try and go to ur local pet shop cause they should see stuff to keep cats away like cats off or something, but do the lion poo thing first xxx

yeah, the hair thing is for deer and such... I have a neighbor that has cats he won't get fixed as well...pfft!!!
The prob is I have one older cat that lives outside here. She never strays past my front or back porch and I have been stuck taking care of her for years now and since the on and off again population explosion from across the street, I have had his cats to deal with on my property as well and some of the males are just evil!

Im quite fond of cat traps myself, I just send them off to the spca after I catch them. I havnt had near as much cat crap in my horse shoe pitches and garden since i started that.

though some people are getting pissed off at me over it, ive sent one cat to the spca 4 times this year. wich costs the owners mony every time they pick it up.

well my dad had a couple of those big barrels that he had some flowers growing in, and the neighbor's cat would always love to jump up on it and sit/lay on the flowers and it would piss my dad off.... lol ... so he took some plastic forks and stuck them upright into the soil so the prongs were sticking straight up so it would poke the cat in the ass if he tried to sit there ..lol..... but i don't know how that would help you any...... have fun!

i've always spread red pepper seeds and i take the stems from the basil i grow and throw them around the garden cut in lilltle segments. i have mostlt done this to keep away bugs ants etc. however i have had cats and there are always some in the neighborhood. i have never really had a problem. not to say i have never seen them in there. but it has never been a continuing neusance or problem for me. oh and i would recommend if they are your cats make sure there litter is really clean or maybe make an area away from the garden with sand and dirt where they can go and turn it avert so often.
