I'm thinking of focusing on physical exercise as a way to build up my discipline.

But I was wondering what everyone thinks are the best ways to build up one's self control.

Yoga helped for me, taught me to be calmer .. I dont get mad as often.

If you dont like the idea of yoga... try Ju Jitsu, or something like Tae Kwon Do. I tried it, but it was too much for me as being disciplined was often taught. My friend took it for 8+ years and he seems to have lots of self-control...

^ I've done a little yoga on the WiiFit, I like some poses, but overall I much prefer strength training and aerobic exercise.
I would be very interested in martial arts but don't have the money.

I was however, thinking of including Tai Chi or meditating in with the aerobics and strength training.

On that note: anyone know any good strength training exercises you can do without weights?
I know some you can do with the couch, such a deadlifting, and using the couch to do high intensity plank exercises for the arms. And of course, things like bicycle crunches and lunges, but I lose interest fast when I don't have a regiment with enough variation..

medicine balls are amazing for strengthening your legs and you can do upper body workouts with them as well as pretty good abs workouts.

Self-discipline is mental. Set goals, don't make excuses, don't over-think things. It's just a choice really. An incredibly easy one if it's what you really want.

For me what helps with variation is just getting outside and exploring new places. Mentally it's much easier with scenery to look at while doing something aerobic. Also, I think the best strength training you can do are hills.[IMG]

yoga is wonderful training for self control. Forcing yourself to hold what might be an uncomfortable position for a count of 60 does wonders for teaching your mind that it is in control of your body.

Also, act deliberately instead of impulsively. Before you do anything, ask yourself, "is this good for me, both physically and mentally?" If the answer is no, don't do it. Quite simple.

as far as physical exercise, I suggest a daily jogging regimen. Forcing yourself to get out of bed on a winter morning to run two miles will teach youself control very quickly

I do burpees 2-3 times a week. I do 10 burpees, rest for 30secs. Then, 9 burpees rest for 30secs. Then, 8, etc. Until I'm down to 1.

I take 2:30 hour walks 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I'll do crunches and pull ups, and jogging as a complement. But burpees and long walks are my usual exercises, along with stretching and posture/breathing exercises in the morning.

Try to keep your eyes off the chick:

Yoga. Take a class, you'll stick to it easier and do more than you would alone. The mental part comes on it's own after that.
