i dunno if this has been done before
but in your own opinion what is the best way to dread
not the way you dreaded or what is the quickeest or neatest necasarily but overall the best way
if your vote for best differs from the method u used then include a post as to why you chose a different method
when choosing best keep in mind the pleasure or pain factors the ammount of work and fussing with them involved and the overall experience
please dont rate simply on looks factors or speed but the entire overall experience

    the options are
    natural aka neglect
    backcombed without wax
    any method with wax
    twist n rip
    twist and neglect
    brush rubbing
    wool wrapping or rubbing
    palmrolling root rubbing tip rubbing
    crochetting or felting
    salon dreads or dread perms

Would palm rolling not apply into all of them, as its a secondary technique to help the dreads take shape, and hold firmer? not like its a stand alone technique for getting dreads.

Hmmm no option for what I did. I think it depends for each person what is best, I definitely think that Natural is good. My method was weird, Its mainly natural, but I did Twist and rip and did a little back combing, but I didnt do it all at once, been doing it over time, and right now im 5 months in and happy with the results so far :)

thats why i made it multiple choice but palmrilling removes alot of the unique surcface features so many preffer to leave it out of other techniques
(i'm still not quite sure whats meant by paklm rolling although just the name gives me a fair idea..i just cant be bothered with all that extra effort)

I have dreads formed Originally by back combing, I have some that were started by twist and rip, and others formed completely naturally.

well i never touched a comb to mine but on some loose strands that were annoting blowing in my face on a long roadtrip i did do someything simular toi twist and rip i thinjk if i understand that right (i never knew about all these methids when i started just knew not to comb... and i played with some just doing what felt natural to do and i think 1 or 2 were soirta like twist n rip and 1 or 2 were.. well kinda like root flipping but not really just tied a knoit in the end then flipped the end through randomly toewards the roots..but only loosly.. mauybe 5 or less flips in 5 or 6 inches of jhhair alnmost like a reverse braid just to get them to stasy together then let em dread on theyre own from therre...it was just to keep looser hairs outtta my eyes
not really a method just..playing woth em

definitely my natural ones are a lot cooler. But I dont know how to backcomb, or twist and rip, i sorta just guessed, and didnt spend a lot of time on it. Also, i've done everything myself.

i think the neglect method is the best for me. its only been about 2 months since i stopped brushing my short hair but i can see a lot of difference. Ive never had long hair before so backcombing is out. not that i would want to do it anyway. the neglect method has been fun so far and was, obviously, not painful.

i cant wait to see my progress in a year. my hair is only 3 inches at the most, 1.5 at the least.

    i'm fairly new here
(i've been wondering thru this forum a while though
    just not posting

i chose neglect and salon dreads.... because, yeah i was dumb for a while, paid money for a waxy mess, then later just neglected (washing/separating of course)
i'm happier not going to a damn salon for matainence

i chose natural as best way but i got mine by backcombing, i would have preffered now to have let them dread naturally, luckily i didnt get too stuck into the wax trap which i was using at first when backcombing but i quickly stopped waxing when i found out the damage it causes.
i think natural is best because your hair is conforming to its own shape rather then being manipulated un-naturally (comb, wax, crochet etc...)

    very well said

    its also somuch more freeing
free yourself from the slavery of salonds combs and the demands of having perfect hair with every hair tamed controlled and in its place
its kinda magical thing to just let it do its thing woythout trying to control the outcome

like how many threads we got from backcomb dreadies like help i have a hair outta place what do i do?
or oh my god i got a loop or lump should i comb em out and start over
they freak out over very lil detail instead of sittin back forgettin to care and just enjotying the ride
when nature takes its course it takes you along the ride gently
but when u fight against nature u have constant frustration because nature wants to go one way and you want to go anothger...

in 18 years i never felt the need to post as help my dreads are____ post cause my dreads are doing just what dreads do

i never worried bouyt fuckin em up cause i never fought against theyre natural process
i never did anything really that could fuck em up
    (except have e,m stepped on)
u cant fuck em up of u dont do nuthin but ket em happen

exactly! to me dreads mean letting go! being free! no worries or cares about what your hair looks like. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE A MESS! :D

But in the modern day, it has to be a refined mess. Refining it makes them look better, but still be dreads. Like you have Bed head, natural and gel made, etc.
That's why I'm gonna probably go the neglect method, back combing if they wont knot, then I'l perhaps palm roll them into shape.
