I love so much music but for lyrics the most original and interesting for me is a. Joni Mitchell - she writes songs that don't necesaarily have choruses or anything - just tells a story - is like she's just telling you stuff on her mind b. Frank Zappa - purely because he has taken me to places I had no idea existed - in someones mind i mean - e.g. Billy the Mountain or Gregory Peckery in Tinseltown c. Yeah Bob Dylan's rage on some old tracks have totally excorsized demons for me
I think Van Morrison is a really underrated lyricist, at least what comes to his 70's stuff. Lou Reed and Joni Mitchell are also way up there.
Bob Dylan, Robert Hunter, Jerry Garcia, Lou Reed, David Gilmour, i aso agree with Ginger on Van Morrison...
Jerry wasn't much of a full song lyricist. He might get an image, but he left it to Hunter. Eiils Paul is an amazing storyteller in the Woody-Townes mold. Emily Kaitz is hilarious, so are Trout Fishing in America (duo, both write). Susan Warner, Vince Gilbert, Antje Duvekot, lots of great songwriters out there.
John Fogerty...just to throw another name in the mix...He's my favorite singer of the 60s era. CCR was one of the very first bands i've ever listened to. You know lyrics are special when you can't help but dance to them! Fogerty is the man.
