Ive always been a huge immortal fan. But emperor is such a close second. Have you guys heard ishans side/solo project? Its pretty good.
Voted Burzum. Out of this list: Burzum Darkthrone Emperor Immortal Mayhem I've grown a bit tired of Satyricon nowadays. I think I've listened to enough of them for the next four years or so. Of Enslaved I only really like Monumension so they wouldn't end up that high, same as Gorgoroth. I guess Dimmu is too untr00 to be included in this poll but I like them lots (more than Mayhem...).
Hard to pick from that list... no failures there. Burzum, then Immortal, then Emperor, then Darkthrone and Mayhem for me. Also: Gorgoroth.
Actually lately I've been more and more geared towards Darkthrone. *wishes he could unvote Burzum* Does anyone know Taake? Carpathian Forest? Kvist? Furze?
Right now I'm listening to Skaur, my latest great discovery from Norwegian soil. It's a one man band playing ambient black metal. Now where have I heard that before? Exactly. Especially Burzum's first two albums come in mind as referention material, but Skaur has an atmosphere of its own, and a remarkably more powerful production, even though the project is still in its demo stage. Go check it out.
I've never heard any material of theirs, but I thought they were more of a progressive death metal band... I like sunflowers.
I thought Extol was a christian band, and therefore has no chance to be the best black metal band. I'm also pretty sure that their music falls more in the death metal genre.
I think most people in the metal 'community' wouldn't even dare to speak out their belief Extol is the best band out of ANY list of possible choices, even if they actually were. It's sad that, even to me, image is certainly important too. Kaiser, for some real Christian black metal, you might want to check out Horde (total Darkthrone rip-off as far as I've heard, but you know what they say about stealing from the best), the Dutch band Slechtvalk, who are decent, and some bands I've only heard OF, are Drottnar, Vaakevandring and Frosthardr.
Black metal is fucking scary. One of the guys from Mayhem shot himself, so they took a a picture of him lying there, dead, and used it as an album cover. That's fucking wrong. Oh yeah, then they made a necklace out of his skull. They go around burning churches and stuff, too (I'm an atheist, but still.) Plus, loads of them go around murdering people - one of them murdered a gay guy in the middle of a forest. And in the early 1990s, these Swedish and Norweigan bands kept threatening to torture and kill each other. One guy ended up in jail for twenty-one years. I'm not having a go at you, but black metal is seriously fucked up and you know it.
