In my opinion, these are the best bands of all time. Keep the list going because i may have forgotten a few. Led Zeppelin, Green Day, ACDC, Oasis, The Who, The White Stripes, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Cage The Elephant, Alice in Chains, All American Rejects, Black Sabbath, Blur, The Clash, Cream, The Doors, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Generation X, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Jam, Jefferson Airplane, The Jimi Hendrix Expirience….. Jimmy Eat World, Joe Jackson, John Lennon, Nickelback, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ozzy Osbourne, The Ramones, Rancid, Seether, Sublime, System of a Down, The Yarbirds, The Stone Roses, The Heavy, U2, The Byrds, Pink Floyd, Queen, Deep Purple, The Sex Pistols, The Bee Gees, The Band............
I appreciate the diversity of your list but I hate these threads. The idea of which band or bands are the best leads to trying to make an objective arguement from a subjective concept. For example I love some of the music on your list like Sublime, The Dead, and the Sex Pistols. But I think Nirvana and Oasis are absolute dreck. If Kurt Cobain didn't commit suicide Nirvana would have been just a footnote. The lyrics were jibberish and the songs formulaic. After living in a couple of youth hostels I refer to Nirvana and Oasis as Hostel Music. If there is someone in a youth hostel with a guitar one night it will come out and get passed around. Eventually some douchebag who has only been playing for a couple of months will get it and start playing Nirvana and Oasis songs and sound better than the original just so he can get down the pants of some Czech girl who doesn't speek any English. This can also be extended to "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley. It's too bad because that is one of my favorite Bob Marley songs. Peace Out, Rev J
What's this thread even doing here? Shouldn't it be in the music section? Maybe if it was the best hippie band, I could see that maybe . Maybe the monitor will move it: or not. PAX
No but quick review: Nirvana Verse: Emin-Amin-Bmin-Amin Mumble incoherently mention guns and some disease and completely random phrases about how depressed you are. Chorus: Gmaj-Cmaj-Dmaj-Cmaj Scream at the top of your lungs something somewhat catchy repeat. Granted Dylan songs are pretty simple from a structure standpoint. "Blowin in the Wind" is just a 12 bar blues form but a lot can be said for the lyrical content. "All Along the Watchtower" is just Amin-G-F-F-G but the lyrics prevent it from being redundant. "Masters of War" is just a D minor chord ad nauseum with scathing lyrics. What exactly is the signifigance of: "With the Lights out It's less Dangerous Here we are now Entertain us I feel Stupid and And contagious Here we are now Entertain us A mullatto An Albino A mosquito My Libido" I've heared rantings from unmedicated Scitzophrenics that made more sense. Peace Out, Rev J
To be fair, there really is a little too much Nirvana hating on this site isn't there..!? Anyone would think they were as bad as My Chemical Romance, or something.
a great song does not have to be some complex chord arrangement set to some obscure time signature. Sometimes simpler is better and it also probably speaks to more people than complex songs. I think this is why alot of pop music get really popular because it's so accessible. That being said I think Nirvana, Oasis and Bob Dylan all have a feeling to their music that is something beyond pop music that makes it stand the test of time more. Some of the riffs they have may not be that complex but it does appeal to the musician in me as they fit perfecctly with their songs. Nirvana's whole thing was making concise songs that got a message across that spoke to a particular audience and detested the bloated progressive and corporate rock scenes of the 1970's. I agree with Reverend though this thread is kind of stupid and we already have a couple list your favorite band threads one of which I made myself. Trying to compile some increasingly comprehensive list seems futile and pointless.
To me Dylan is an easy target because he is still alive. But how daare you blaspheme St. Cobain. Part of the reason they got popular was that blonde hair and those sad puppydog eyes that made you want to take him home and take care of him. I remember when Nevermind came out. But by that time I had already heard The Knack and Black Flag so Nirvana was old hat to me ("We're basically The Knack after an assault by Black Flag", Kurt Cobain). I don't believe that music has to be complex to get it's point across. The fact that Nirvana had to add a second guitarist because "I cant string together 3 chords and mumble at the same time." Denotes a lack of the genious that has been credited to Cobain. As a matter of fact in my opinion the 2 best songs in the Nirvana repiore they didn't even write. The Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie and Where Did You Sleep Last Night which was credited to Leadbelly but was probably an old Irish Murder Ballad. At least nobody accused Oasis of Genious. They wrote half assed pop songs but in general were whiny little cunts. Noel Gallagher's voice in general is completely irritating to me. And the fact that everybody who try's to sing Oasis feel the need to sing like that just irritates me more. By the way I love simple music. I could listen to the Stones all fucking day. Chuck Berry fanfuckingtastic. Johnny Cash doesn't get much better. Willie Nelson the man's like my stoner granddad. Social Distortion is like the old barfighter with great battle tales. Peace Out, Rev J
Oh yah because Sid Vicious was such a great bass player he really deserves to be as popular as he was Nirvana is certainly not one of my favorite bands and I think overrated but if you are going to be pointing out these flaws in Cobain yet stand behind The Sex Pistols it seems a bit hypocritical.
First Sid never really played bass in the Sex Pistols. Glen Matlock played bass on "Anarchy in the UK" and "God Save the Queen". For the rest of the sessions Sid had come down with Hepatitus and was in the hospital. Steve Jones played bass on most of the rest. I think there was only one track that Sid played on but I don't know which one. Live they usually shut off Sid's amp. Second I never said that The Sex Pistols were genious. Lyrically it was less random incoherant mumbling with more centralised themes. Although I could also throw stones at the Political Ideology as a Fashion Statement aspects of The Sex Pistols and their ilk. I also give props to John Lydon for having the stones to admit Journey were his favorite band and to freely admit that the Sex Pistols reunion was purely for the money. Peace Out, Rev J
You are arguing my point for me. You are sitting here bashing Cobain's talent when this guy barely even played any music for the group and is still recognized as a punk icon.
