i think im gonna have to agree with you on devendra banhart. ever since the very beginning of this year, i have gotten so in to him, and his new album just proves that he is still going strong! im not quite sure if cripple crow is my favorite album of the year, but its definitly in the top 5! here are some of my favorites of this year: Animal Collective - Feels Antony And The Johnsons - I am a bird now Andrew Bird - Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Production Of Eggs The Decemberists - Picaresque Iron & Wine - Woman King EP The Fiery Furnaces - EP Vashti Bunyan - Lookaftering Six Organs Of Admittance - School Of The Flower Sleater-Kinney - The Woods Sufjan Stevens - Illinois Deerhoof - The Runners Four the white stripes new one was alright, but it hasnt stuck to me as well as their other albums. A few other albums im still warming up to are my morning jacket (Z) and Okkervil River (Black Sheep Boy). they are good albums, but i havent listened to them enough. Of course the biggest disappoint for me this year is the fiery furnaces Rehearsing My Choir. its interesting to say the least, but its not something i can listen to constantly...but i believe their releasing another album thats grandma free early next year, so im not to worried. i think im gonna have to wait until december till i decide what my favorite album of the year will be...its only october
Quoting Rhasta "Six Organs Of Admittance - School Of The Flower" top 5 release for me in 2005 no question
I do a Top 10 every year in my journal. Your question got me thinking...and I realized 4 of my top 5 are female singer/songwriters. That has NEVER happened before. A strange year for music, indeed. My Top 5 (no order) Martha Wainwright, Martha Wainwright Best track: Bloodymotherfuckingasshole Grey DeLisle, Iron Flowers Best track: Her take on Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody Tracy Bonham, Blink The Brightest Best track: Did I Sleep Through It All Maria McKee, Peddlin' Dreams Best track: Turn Away Kaiser Cheifs, Employment Best track: I Predict a Riot Disappointments: Oasis, White Stripes, and Garbage. Each of them put out half baked, just okay albums.
oasis' new album "half-baked and just okay?" you must not be a fan of oasis, then. Don't Believe the Truth is easily their 3rd best album ever (and that's saying a lot). so far, favourite albums, off the top of my head since i wont get on my old computer and find my list from the first 6 months of this year (in no particular order): Devendra Banhart~ Cripple Crow Hal ~ Hal Oasis ~ Don't Believe the Truth Marah ~ If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry The Redwalls ~ De Nova Flotation Toy Warning ~ Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck The Rolling Stones ~ A Bigger Bang The Kills ~ No Wow CocoRosie ~ Noah's Ark i had a list of more than 30 albums that i stopped adding to back in mid-june on my old computer. i should go get that.
i don't listen to/buy nearly enough music to even give a list of 5 of the best--but my favorites have been Picaresque by the Decemberists LaDeDa by Joel Plaskett Hair In My Eyes Like A Highland Steer by Corb Lund the oasis album is good-ive just never really liked them. the white strips one is also pretty good-has a nice blues base feel to it, but not one of my favorites...same with the new Franz Ferdinand. it's good and ill burn a copy off the one my sister bought (same with white stripes) but not a favorite
oh yeah, i saw that you replied and the first thing that came to mind was the decemberists' latest album! great album.
Actually, been a huge fan since 1994. Have seen them live 6 times. But you say "3rd best," they had plenty of time to do better than 3rd. Couldn't I even hope for maybe-2cd. Or heaven forbid, the best of their career. I think control and songwriting should go back to Noel, exclusively. And when I saw them this September in L.A. Liam sounded like shite. I just think they can do better.
well yeah, liam just cannot sing live anymore, and hasn't been able to since the Be Here Now tour. they need to transpose all the songs to lower keys or he's going to lose his voice for good, but only 'wonderwall' and i think 'live forever' receive that honor. ooohhhh well. the next album will be their best ever, but to call Don't Believe the Truth "half-baked and just okay" is freaking insane. its the best album that's been put out by a big record company this year, which isnt really saying much, but its a great album and would've been the best of '95 had it been put out instead of Morning Glory.
Actually it came out in 2004, but in Belgium it was only released in 2005, so I must say that 'Funeral' by The Arcade Fire is my favourite album from the year for so far. I repeat, for so far, because there are still some albums that will be released this year and which I'm really looking forward to (especially the Babyshambles debut!). But at this moment I go for The Arcade Fire's 'Funeral', followed by 'I'm wide awake...' by Bright Eyes, 'The Beekeeper' by Tori Amos, 'Cripple Crow' by Devendra Banhart and 'A certain trigger' by Maxïmo Park.
in your slightly biased opinion ofcourse I love Morning Glory almost as much as you but its a fact that it was not the best album of 1995...definitly top 5 though :sunglasse
well, 'twas the best "mainstream" album.... The Wondermints come to mind as having put a better album that year than Morning Glory.
Steve Kimock Band - Eudemonic Amos Lee - Amos Lee Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production Of Eggs (on Ani's label....) Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
