I watched on the news how all the conservative war lovers were getting all butthurt about this... what's so wrong with a place saying they don't want the marines??? Isn't it like saying you don't want someone in your home? Even if it IS a college; it seems the majority doesn't want the death salesmen.

Because defense is a public good, and they're free-riding.

Don't disrespect the Marines. They don't decide if we go to war or not, but they put their lives on the line so you and me don't have to. This is ridiculous I will never support this bullshit. I don't support the war but my issue is with the politicians that put them there not the Marines themselves.

    Oh yeah?
If everyone has to share the burden in this war,
How come the Bush twins are not in Iraq?

Ok ya, maybe some did, but some also signed up in the Marines because they want to do a service for this country so we don't have to have any type of draft. Once again I don't support this war by any means, but we have Marines dying everyday, I thought these are the people anti-war protestors are fighting to bring home. You think they'd show them a little more respect.

Uhm, I don't think your Marine buddies signed up because they didn't want a draft to happen.

Actually, it is the warmonger politicians who prefer not to have a draft.
    Why?

Because the Republican Neo-Con, politico-military planners of this insane war know that citizen soldiers are anathema to an imperial military.

I guess, these politico-military folks learned some lesson in Vietnam.

I don't think there is going to be any kind of draft any time soon anyway, since the Marines seem able to find enough pawns to fill the ranks for their military adventures.

Berkeley just want these "pawn" recruiters away from the neighborhood.

Hahah, oops, you are right for the most part. Maybe so their brother wouldn't be, but no, not them personally. But they did sign up to do a service for this country, which in turn, keeps us from having to even consider a draft. And to call that service as nothing more than being "killing machines" is unfair and wrong.

Some service indeed by your Marine buddies.

Signing up willingly to fight in a war is suicide and stupid. Stay home, burn your draft cards, read some books, go hiking. don't go off to fight the government's war. When someone joins the marines, army, etc. they're signing up to be a tool, a weapon of the government pigs, and really I have little respect for that...

Public good means that everybody benefits from having the army regardless of whether they contribute. So Berkely still benefits from the army even if they kick out the marine recruiters.

Sorry. I'll try to watch the low-end academic terms.

You can feel that signing up to fight in a war is suicide and stupid, but you can still respect those that put their lives on the line. Marines aren't only in Iraq, they are across the world. You really think the Marines don't do some good, that they don't save lives?

I realize now that most of you are against the Marines because you are anti-war, not because you want to bring American lives home. You don't respect any of their sacrifices and they are just like the "government pigs" that are the REASON they are in Iraq. I also realize that I'm probably not saying anything that will make you respect the Marines, so I probably won't post in this topic again. I'm not for the war but I think its idiotic to hate on the Marines. You'd think hippies would be a little more understanding, not so black and white.

I've seen these guys when they get home, and the bruises on the wive's faces, the holes in the wall, the traumatized children, the silent 100 yard stare. These once men have become exactly what those in power programmed them to be, killing machines. Uncle Sam waved cash in their face to do his dirty work and the ones over there now are the ones who bit. It sucks for them, but they knew (or should've known what they were getting into when they signed up). My sympathy however is with the innocent civillians being slaughtered, and the people who will die in retaliation for the attacks of the killing machines. I don't go to Berkely so it's none of my affair, but I understand their decision.

A'ight, hmm.. you sound like a true pig supporter. :jester:

Perhaps, you yourself can contribute to the public good by signing up for the Army and shipping to Iraq, rather than surfing the web and posing as a "hippie" in hipforum. :)
There a lot of poser dudes around here, ya'know...

I hate to be fuckin' blunt, but tell me how do these images of the army abuses, benefited the public good?

Oh yeah, I guess, those kids who were shot in Kent State, back in 1970, they too, benefitted from the Army... :$

Eh, I think what you'r trying to say is that Marines are simply a bunch of terribly misunderstood, programmed natural born killers. :jester:

I was trying to be nice about it, but now I don't care because you sound like true 14-year old idiot with a black and white view of the world and an anachronistic stereotype instead of his own ideas.

I'm not American. But you're kidding of yourself if you don't think you benefit from having a strong (noting the satire of public good) army. Pax Americana came with some pretty sweet economic benefits. Plus, I'm pretty sure you aren't a Soviet right now.

Woohoo, an ad hominem logical fallacy. Way to make an intelligent debate out of it.

Once again, proving you have no idea what you're talking about. It's a "public" good (good as in good or service), not the normative adjective. Moron. The good is safety.

    Whoa! Surprise.
    Look what we got here.
A foreigner trying to influence local American politics.
I thought, it was the other way around. :jester:

    So, you're not an American.
Good. Stay in that shithole wherever you are and stay there.
We already got enough poser punks like you in this country.

Unfortunately, most Americans don't care about foreign policy as long as it doesn't directly affect them.

Since you're not American, what makes you think you can directly affect local Berkeley politics, you don't live in this country, you can't even vote, just proves that you're the fucking the moron.

So, having said that, you can take your skateboard and shove it up your foreign ass.

How is American kids at Kent State getting shot by National Guardsmen back in 1970, considered to be for the moral good, public safety?

Since up to now, you havent answered my question, it just proves you have no clue to what the fuck you're talking about.
