how do you deal when your being discouraged from drawing? like from over critical art teachers, unsupportive friends/family, or even from people here? I haven't had the courage to do any art for a long time, I just keep thinking "what's the point"?

I guess people have different reasons why they do art. But for me, I do it for ME. I don't care if people think its good or not because I'm not trying to get anywhere with my art. If I'm satisfied with it, thats enough. I mean yeah I love it when people like my stuff and I gladly show it to people all the time. But people have different preferences and different tastes. Art is art, there's really no right or wrong (or I don't think there should be). Do it for you, and that is truly expressing yourself, or whatever it is you want to express.

The what's the point thing is the tough one. But what is the point with a lot of stuff? Anyhow, it's better for you than watching tv. So there is one point. Maybe don't show your stuff to those that try to discourage you. It is important to know who will be honest and constuctively critical in a way that you get benefit from.

i agree with somedude. and also, when you draw and paint or whatever form of art your are doing, the more you do the better you get. so after you do it for a while, then start showing people. and even masters get criticism. noone is perfect. you just need to find people who will do it constructively.

Why does it need to be good though? It doesn't. Art should be done to express yourself and expand your mind and take your thoughts and feelings further than just thoughts or feelings. It exercises your mind in a beautiful, healthy way. There doesn't have to be a point, either. Art can exist for its own sake. (That I actually learned in Fine Arts class). Unless you're doing art for work then it doesn't need to be good.

I do art for me. No one else. If you do art just to get the praise of others, you get discouraged too easy.
I had an art teacher tell me my work was shit and that it wouldn't get me anywhere. I switched schools because of some problems and the art teacher I transfered too really praised me....
People have different opinions on what exactly art is....and what makes art good.
Don't worry about what other people say....everyone is going to have SOMETHING to say about it. And, just do art for YOU.

I usually the one who discourages me haha.
I'm a perfectionist when I'm painting and what not so sometimes if I mess up the slightest bit I'll trash it and start over, even if it's fixable.
And usually when I start over I never finish.

Just remember the feeling you got when you put that first idea from your head into reality.
