I just heard this on the World Service for the coverage on Saturday. It included clips of people saying how great/wonderful/amazing etc it would be. One-sided promotion of the monarchy to the extent of blind sycophantic hysteria. What about those in this country (such as me) who don't give a fuck? Where are we represented in the BBC coverage?
Even If You Don't Like The Monarchy......At Least Be Happy For The Beautiful Young Couple...... Cheers Glen.
England is strange about their monarchy. You reduced their power centuries ago yet you still want them around for some reason. What do they do for you besides take tax dollars? But lots of people seem to love it.
Why should I be happy for a pair of total strangers whom I've never met? Why them over anyone else getting married?
Aren't You A Bit Too Young To Be Screaming...."Get Off My Lawn"...???.... Ya Bloody Old Grump.... Cheers Glen.
Far from costing us money, the royal family brings tens of millions of pounds into the country every year. The hotels alone around Buckingham Palace and in Windsor provide thousands of jobs, all with tax paying workers and profits. Gift and souvenir shops, along with tours provide even more jobs and money. Regarding costs. Their is no Royal flight or ships and when flown by the RAF, regular air force staff are deployed, resulting in no additional costs. Likewise the royal guard is a full military regiment that has been deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Marching up and down the Mall is just an alternative to a military camp parade ground. Observant people may have noticed that on occasions the guards uniforms are grey (rather than red). This is when the regiment are deployed on exercises abroad and the Scotch guards take on the ceremonial duties in London. Again with no additional costs. With ceremonial events such as the Royal Film Performance, all monies (NOT PROFITS) are donated to charity. From a government standpoint. Prime ministers visit the queen regularly and although she has no direct control, she has a huge stabilizing over parliament. It is estimated that the costs of looking after Trump alone for a single day, exceeds the cost of police protection of the entire royal family and our entire government for a whole year. Air force 1 alone is replaced every 5 years at a cost of more than one billion dollars and it is staffed by dedicated teams 24/7. Don't bother trying to purchase last years model as a souvenir, it gets blown up. Some nonsense about national security.!!!
Anyone would think there's a royal wedding tomorrow or something. I'm not a royal fanatic, but I think they're okay. Maybe it's a chance for the country to come together and experience some collective joy about something. We need to. I love my country, for all its faults. Anyone else notice the bride and groom have very similar bobble noses?
People always bring this argument up. I don't give a fuck about the costs. What about principles? Why should we be subjects of inbreds rather than citizens of our own state?
Even JR sings " We love our Queen " ! Would take Our royal family over any other ( would you rather have the Trumps ?)
Your television has about 70 channels AND an 'off' button. Their is a shortage of material to fill the channels, so I agree that most of them are full of rubbish being repeated for the 49th time, but if you are so worried about avoiding William and Harry, why watch the BBC (a UK news channel) In reality, no one would broadcast the wedding in the US, if no one watched it, but the viewing figures will make the channels a fortune due to the advertising revenue. Some advertisers have even pulled their advertising because they cannot afford the bill. All that aside. Even here in the UK, we get far more news stories about Trump than we do about our own royal family I am not complaining, watching him is often more fun than most comedy programs. Stick here on HF during the wedding and you will not have to worry about Harry any more.
I can understand your points here. I am not much of a royal people watcher......but I did notice Diana like everyone else did, when she was alive.......and of course was saddened by her death......... I had a soft spot for Harry...as he was known from the very beginning...he was the spare.......How would you like to be called the spare...."You are just the spare, kid...."........and I am not saying that is how it was presented to him, but that is what it boils down to. He had a very difficult time coping with the loss of his mother....he wanted to leave the royal family at one point and have nothing to do with it....and he went wild......but then he sought help and got professional help, I understand.....and has a happy ending now...... From a human perspective, I do wish him happiness now. These people are all on the world stage, so we have to be dead as people not to know anything about them, i guess...or not to care sometimes. and who doesn't like a happy ending for anyone?
