I'm at the grocery store pulling the car around. The handle has a plastic cover but is metal underneath. Touching the metal I get shock every time.

If I was with plastic sandals I think I wouldn't. Not that I would not to get shocked but "I was told" that I shouldn't get static shocks barefoot.

    Pictures to understand setting.

The plastic or rubber wheels on the cart are the culprit. Being made of a 'dielectric' material, when they roll across the vinyl tiled floor they build up a static charge.

Yes the carts shock me, particularly at Walmart. However I've seen reports of the same all over the web and I can assure you almost all of those people are wearing shoes. So it's not just a barefoot thing.

I get the static shock at grocery stores too but from the shelves. one was loud enough a lady standing next to me heard it and asked if I was ok or she heard my CRAP as I shook my hand. she noticed I was barefoot and mentioned I should be grounded and shouldn't have gotten shocked.

I only shop where the carts have chains on them to release the electricity to the floor

I think I figure it out. There are 2 instances:

    1) The most common one is wearing shoes with rubber soles. This isolates the body and build up static. As soon as we touch something conductive that is grounded or has a large body, we get the discharge shock.

    2) The other scenario is the opposite. Without shoes we’re grounded. If we touch something that has built up static, it will discharge trough us like it happens with the store car.

Either way, shoes or not, we can’t prevent static shocks. So try to enjoy it :)
