so i was goin to go drivin with my dad the other day and gunna barefoot it and he had me go back in the house to get shoes cause he claims its not safe to drive w/o them. he was sayin my feet would slip off the pedals. i dont that its that big of a risk, but i was wonderin if anyone has ever heard of any real basis on accidents caused by not wearing shoes when driving
Geez, I do it all the time in summer. Your feet will NOT slip off the pedals If nothing else, you can feel the pedals, unlike with shoes.
Not true, good driving instructors will even tell women with high heels or platform shoes to take those off when driving.
Shoes come off if I'll be driving for any length of time to keep my feet from 'going to sleep'. If I start out barefooted I do carry shoes on the floorboard just in case...
Oh, just so you know, it's not illegal anywhere in the US to drive illegal, but cops make up bullshit to give people tickets for. My girlfriend got a ticket for driving barefoot back in the day. She had no idea it wasn't illegal until now.
I've almost never worn shoes while driving for about the past 18 years. Never slipped off the pedals nor had any other problems. I actually feel way safer driving barefoot than any other way.
I was pulled over by a Florida state trooper a few years ago, and he had me get out of the car for a period. I was barefoot, but did not worry when getting out of the car barefoot, because I knew there was no law he could hang me on, and if he tried to, I would sue the FHP for false <arrest/whatever> for the cop citing a non-existent law. I was curious if he would make anything of it, but satisfied when he did not. He didn't say a word about me being barefoot. As for the feet slipping off the pedals when barefoot. NEVER. I can't imagine your dad would be so full of shit as to offer that flimsy, bullshit excuse for making you wear shoes to drive. Every day, millions of men drive to work in business suits with SLICK-SOLED BUSINESS SHOES that have no tread on them whatsoever. If anything is dangerous to drive in because of the risk of slipping on the pedals, it is those kinds of shoes. You should be chastising your dad. -Jeffrey
I've had my car since July 2001 and have never once driven it for even 1 foot of distance with anything on my feet. It's a stick, and I have great feel on the pedals because I always drive it barefoot. -Jeffrey
I have been driving barefeet for 10 years now and I much prefer it this way. What a lot of codswallop about your feet slipping from the pedals. Parents do come up with some crap sometimes. On the contrary, you feel the pedals under your feet so you have more control. In Summer I am always barefeet so its no problem popping into the car and driving off but in Winter I am in flip flops but I take them off when I drive. And if I am dressed up going somewhere, I would drive barefeet and then put my shoes on when I get there and on returning back, off comes my shoes and socks!! I dont think there is any law about driving barefeet in the UK. I see many women driving barefeet in Summer and I have not heard about any issues with the police.
hehe, i drive a stick... and it's so fun to drive it barefoot... i'm with peaceful jeffrey... feelin' the pedals on my tootsies is a trip! hehe no pun intended.
Incidentally I also drive my 40-foot city bus (converted to an art festival bus) barefoot. All the turn signals and other lights are controlled with buttons on the floor. I feel them better in my bare feet.
I love driving barefoot... Its the best feeling in the world... I would do it all year long if there wasn't so much snow here... I hate it come november when the shoes have to go back on..
I've been driving barefoot for longer than most people posting here have been alive ... 33 years worth and have NEVER NEVER EVER had a problem with foot slippage on the pedals. In fact you can feel the pedals and know if you don't have a good coverage on it where if you are in shoes, you might have just the corner of the brake instead of the whole pedal. drive barefoot, your feet will thank you. peace out, bob
I drove barefoot throughout my entire summer trip last year. No slippage, no problems whatsoever. I have to admit, it felt good to be barefoot. In fact, all I had on was a pair of shorts. Wish I didn't have that, but when you're at a rest area, it's easier to explain putting on your shoes in the parking lot than your pants.
http://www.barefooters.org/ the Society for Barefoot Living home page. it has a bunch of articles about barefooting including one on it being legal in the states
