Just wondering, has anyone else here ever been clubbing barefoot? I normally just wear my heels to get in the place, then they come off practically straight away! I just love dancing barefoot, does anyone else do the same?

Hi, Meg. I think I mentioned it before - I do the same. Even though I don't wear heels, my feet do get very hot in shoes and clubs and so I often bring a carrier bag stuffed in my trouser pocket, that I can pull out once I'm inside a club, and then stuff my shoes, socks, jumper and anything else in it. If there are officious looking staff wandering around then I will keep it close by and try not to draw too much attention to myself and stay hidden amongst the crowds. But when I went to Oceana in Nottingham, it was a massive place, with the floor nearly all carpeted, and there were lots of girls walking around barefoot so I decided to take my bag to the cloakroom and leave it there. The only hassle I got was on the way when someone told me I wasn't allowed to wander around carrying a bag, and when I replied asking directions to the cloakroom he was more than helpful.

I've often seen girls dancing barefoot in clubs, but never blokes, presumably because most people are really afraid of treading on something, or being stepped on, but girls eventually give into their painfully silly choice of footwear, while blokes tend not to care if they get too hot or not.

Do you have to be careful not to be spotted, or make sure your heels can be seen nearby when the bouncers do their rounds, or are you generally left to get on with it? I often feel that girls get treated far more leniently when it comes to appearance and dress code in clubs.

I don't go clubbing that often though, but when I do, I enjoy it so much more barefoot, as all of a sudden I feel I have about five times as much energy and I can enjoy dancing, and even standing around and am not constantly thinking about how hot my feet are - and when my body heat escapes through my feet then the rest of me feels cooler as well.

By the way, can I take it from the time stamp of your post that you've just come back from a night of barefoot clubbing?

Yeah, I'd just come back home from a night out, my feet were pitch black from all the grime on the floor! I tend to keep my heels in my hand just in case if I'm dancing, in case a bottle or something gets dropped, but if I'm just sat talking, i dont particularly make sure that my heels are visible, I just drop them on the floor!

You could do us all a favour by listing clubs where you've had no hassle going barefoot, and a separate list for the ones where you've had a lot so we all know which clubs to go for.

Incidentally my feet are pitch black too. But just from walking into town and back. Just been chilling in town, frying myself on Parkers' Piece, a couple of hours each either side of some lunch. And to think people usually go abroad just to do that.

I tend to go clubbing less and less, not because of any barefoot issues (although chances are most places would turn you away if you tried entering shoeless) but the pretentious 'look at me' types whose heads are so stuck up their rear ends.

Mind you I went to Fabric in London recently for a friends 30th and although I had my flip-flops as a back-up I didn't need to bring them out, quite ironic as I'd made up a little white lie about my killer heels killing me if I'd have been challenged. Think barefoot's the least of the worries for those kind of clubs anyway, and punters are subjected to quite rigourous searches when entering and being barefoot means there's one less place to hide any illicit substances.

And for the record the place rocked

once i did and i was kicked.
the fun thing is that they also kicked my two friends too and they were both shod and quiet girls. then they hanged the guys at the door who let me in barefoot, i suppose . it went like this: a column of obese, bald, apish private guards came on the dancing floor, asked where my shoes were and i answered that i had none. they asked me how i managed to get in without footwear and i said that at the gates no one told me shit about dress code, they just allowed me to enter. at this point the horde of blubbers in uniform grabbed and drove us out stampede-like.

I'm an occasional visitor of Psytrance / Goa Trance parties (indoors as well as outdoors), and since the party people at these locations are more of a multi-colored, hippie and freaky type, bare feet are very common there - and the barefoot people are the ones looking happiest...

Of course, I want to be and am part of that happier crowd.

    Wiggling trance-ish toes,

This practice is fairly well accepted in NC and SC for women, especially at the beach. Not okay for guys.

I've been out to bars barefoot with no problem. The casual bars here seem to be pretty lax about dress code. I don't go to bars with dress codes because I don't want to dress up just to go out.

But about places that have bouncers on the door anyway? Do they still let you in even without a dress code?

All women or just the hot chicks? I'm afraid to say that kind of bias does exist.

Yeah, because there's ALWAYS glass lying around on the floors of clubs.

Come on! How many times have you seen a glass get dropped on the floor of a bar or restaurant where it wasn't cleaned up in about 30 seconds? And most clubs use plastic cups now, anyway.

People are so stupid! Going barefoot is natural and healthy and it's the way evolution designed us to be. And especially in modern American society where everything is so clean and sanitary, there's no excuse to wear shoes. People need to just pull their heads out of their a**es and live like Nature intended, and leave those of us who already do alone.

I stepped on a massive bit of glass last summer in a pub/bar because it was so dark I didn't see it. I won't go in pubs/bars/clubs barefoot anymore. This bit of glass was the bottom of a smashed bottle and the pointed bit went about an inch into the very middle of my heel. Hurt like hell.

I've cut myself on glass in pubs a couple of times. It stung a bit, and seeing the blood after wiping it onto my other foot was a bit alarming, but I just made shore I washed it thoroughly when I got home and I was fine. But both those times happened when I walked right through some recently broken glass (or in one case was cautiously dancing on it for a good 10 minutes).

But to be honest I'd rather cut myself and be able to say that I can cut myself and it's my fault and not the fault of anyone else and rules therefore don't need to be imposed.

Lots of places have carpeted floors now so glass doesn't break as easily, and when you step on broken glass it sinks into the carpet more than it does into your skin - and I believe those are the places that are more tolerant with bare feet (once you're inside and past the bouncers that is).

    Well said!

I gather that things are getting to be as bad on your side of the pond as they are here, in terms of people suing other people for things that are their own fault.

when i go into clubs and the like a common thing is that slight burning sensation coming from dog ends on the floor i always happen to tread on . funny is that i always realize five seconds after the contact. in fact if i put my foot over something really hot i feel heat over a delay of a few seconds, like Peter Boyle as the creature in Frankenstein Junior when the eremite offers him a cigar.

a good start for firewalking, i guess...

Yep. They've given me no problem at all about being barefoot. Even in a pretty filthy bar where I felt foolish for going barefoot...but filth on the floor doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I've not had any trouble in the following places -
corporation, plug, leadmill (all in Sheffield), and 5th avenue, pure, and opus (all in Manchester)
