In America, are bank deposits guaranteed by the Federal Government?

Yes. I think all US banks are members of FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) that guarantees bank deposits up to $100,000 per customer.

That said, there are a number of bank scams where, for example someone gives you a check and asks for some of the money back. When the check is deposited in your account, it immediately shows up in your bank balance, but it actually takes several days to clear. So you could receive a bad check and think it's actually good, and mistakenly give a scammer money.

The FDIC guarantee is only a guarantee that an account holder will get their money back that they have actually deposited in their account. It doesn't guarantee that checks deposited into, or written from an account are good.

Not all banks are FDIC insured.
