It's funny, because some of the people you would most expect to use/have used drugs -- mostly because their music seems so weird and... different -- didn't use any at all.

Obviously Frank Zappa is one of the more obvious ones. Not only was Zappa vehemently opposed to drug use when it came to himself, but anyone in his band that was caught using drugs was immediately gotten rid of.

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull is another person. Like Zappa, he is highly intelligent, and this can be seen simply by listening to the man eloquently speak. He put out some very good and quite original music with Tull in the late 60s and early 70s. Anderson once said: "I've never smoked marijuana or taken any of those drugs. The main reason I don't do it is because everybody else does — it strikes me as boring."

Peter Gabriel is another person whose work hasn't been influenced by drugs. You would think that by listening to some of the work he did with Genesis in the early 70s, especially the lyrics, coupled with his look around this time, that surely he must have been taking something, but he claims that that only drug he ever ingested was cannabis, and it was done so involuntarily by eating cake that, unbeknownst to him, had marijuana in it.

Of course there is Robert Fripp from King Crimson, perhaps one of the most talented and innovative guitarists of all-time.

Brian Eno is another one that comes to mind.

Can anyone think of any others?

Ted "the idiot" Nugent is very anti-drug.
He claims he didn't know that Journey to the Center of the Mind was about drugs.

    Also "Marble Mouth" Springsteen.

But they might not count as I don't think their music is very creative.

Got no clue which musicians didn't use drugs. Generally I consider all good music creative too. So yeah, don't know where I would start either :p

Thanks so much....My computer got a virus.....right after I asked here, as silly me clicked on a threat detected thing that sprung up. It looked legit. Needed to send my computer to a computer whiz here to fix, and will cost $200.00, maybe. Will get it back tomorrow, and now I am borrowing a friend's computer....so.... tough going with that today.....but I want to thank you so much for answering my question here.....and I certainly do not want to hijack any threads. OK, off to hear that song once more! :)

I don't believe for one second that Zappa didn't use drugs.. he may not have used them repetitively, but he definitely used drugs at least once. Don't care what ANYBODY says.

Maybe not creative in the sense as some of these other bands but pioneers of their genre..

Of course, I would think Frank Zappa stands paramount among those.

Good music is good music - no matter what brain states it comes from.

Doesn't make much of a difference to me which drugs musicians did or didn't do.

Sure some drugs can help some people's creativity, but they can also kill it. The whole topic is overrated and real silly to me. And though I intuitively understand the association, it doesn't make any sense to me.

i seriously do not know nor care who did or did not consume what mind altering substances. i also see no point in ratings or name recognition. if i hear a sequence of sounds that i like, that's what that is. i don't even know who's anything.

there were some groups in the 60s that were commercial that i liked, but i don't even pay attention to wither a musician is proffessional or not. i don't listen to commercial radio. i hardly ever listen to any radio. all of the music i listen to are things people have done themselves for free.
