I have young nephews and every year I hear about them getting involved in their school nativity play... they are still in single figures and can have no possible conception of the ideological baggage which is being forced upon them in this seemingly simple and innocent annual event. A modern secular society has no place for religion at the heart of its state institutions. Yet activities like this clearly put religious indoctrination by the back door at the centre of our education system in these traditional throwbacks to our superstitious past. Should we ban this unthinking indoctrination of our kids?

Shouldn't we ban the school nativity as a first step to banning christmas altogether?

Ill come back to this after ive been to the shops and done other things im supposed to be doing, but for now, this comment made me laugh

"Never mind adding the Welsh dragon to our flag it seems we should be adding the crescent moon and the hammer and sickle! We are throwing away all semblences of the British culture - shame those spineless, mindless "educators" behind the "no navity" movement."

Its irritating and laughable. Why are these kinds of comments EVERYWHERE i turn these days?

From the day I came over it has shocked me honestly that they are allowed to do Nativity plays in the school.

Back in the States, you're not allowed to even mention the connection between Christmas and the Bible. If a teacher puts up a nativity scene in the classroom it invokes a scandal.

If you had kids, you could just tell them it's the traditional panto.

Heh, there is no connection between christmas and the Bible! Christmas is a pagan festival co-opted by christians centuries after the Bible was written:)

I just sent a comment. Something along the lines of "yes let's keep the British religious traditions alive. By the way, we were all Pagan before Christianity came over. Happy feast of Mithras everyone!"

It fucking annoys me how Christians whine about stuff like this when the exact same thing happened a few thousand years ago.

(edit) crap, Lithium beat me to it.

Haha, I hadn't actually read the readers' comments, just the article itself, but they are damn entertaining:D

"There is no one left to defend Christians. The Government are at best not interested in maintaining the great heritage being lost. Would to God we had Christian leaders in top positions willing to stand up and help our cause. Expect Britain to go downhill like never before if we as a nation do not repent of this and all our wrongdoings."

Actually, though Jedi may not believe in other religions, they do not hold prejudice against them. We are all one in The Force, no matter where we come from or what we believe.

Jedi isn't a religion. It is a concept on the idea of psychological development. I think the key terminology is indeed, "Psychology".

Perhaps we should replace nativity plays with a re-enactment of Star Wars:confused:

Nobody said it was, though I perhaps insinuated by saying "other religions". Though I'd hesitate in calling it a psychology too, since it goes beyond the study of mental behaviour; there have been instances of manipulation of The Force in the physical plane. If anything, I'd say the Jedi "practice" use of The Force, the same way a doctor practices medicine.

This opens up another question; since religion is usually based upon belief rather than knowledge, and there is a lot of evidence in the Star Wars canon of The Force being real, could it be classed as a religion in that continuity? Nobody could really go through all the events that happened (don't forget the Expanded Universe novels too) and chalk each and every manipulation of The Force up to coincidence or human/alien error.

Perhaps we should go to war with the PC Brigade. They are taking our lives, our freedoms and choices in society.

Yet again, the PC brigade have thus dominated the British society and now the world.

I guess everybody wants to rule the world.

I would see this as quite the reverse, by banning religion from schools we are giving children the freedom to choose rather than having a belief system foisted upon them when they are too young to have developed the critical faculties required to properly evaluate the evidence and make decisions for themselves. This is all about opening up choice rather than closing it down:)

I also think we should ban anyone from taking part in any religious practice before the age of 18, forcing children into such activities is indoctrination and a form of mental abuse. That might have to wait until phase two of my cultural reform programme though:D

What a load of rubbish again lithium, why don't you go and spend some time exploring the world of your nephews instead of condemning them and their parents from your lofty hallows, I really don't understand your hate.

Childhood is a world of fairy tales and imagination stop trying to remove the magic in their world, try really hard and you might get a glimmer in your own memory, what have you got to offer as replacement ?

So what if children still have nativities? To most of them it will be some fun, dress up and show of to their parents what they can do! Does that mean they will all grow up to be bible preaching people - even if they do will you love them less?! Let children have fun and learn things for themselves! You might say that that nativities and religion etc in schools will brainwash children, but if it is all taken away leaving them not being able to learn and experience, you are also brainwashing them to believe in something you do! People are free in life to decide for themselves!
