So we all know by now that Christianity has hijacked christmas, attempting to turn this secular celebration into a religious festival. Now that most of us are atheists, and the rest of us are getting there, surely it's time to pass legislation finally once and for all banning nativity, Christ's image and any religious content from the winter holiday season. I applaud the Birmingham local council that banned use of the word Christmas, renaming the midwinter festival as 'Winterval'. I applaud the courthouse in Newcastle that replaced its Christmas tree with a 'Winter tree'. I applaud the Norwich company that refused to sell Christmas ornaments with the word 'Christ' or 'Christmas', stocking only secular items such as sledges, silver balls, baps and hammers. I AM not atheist nor a christian. but i believe banning the word christmas is just stupid. 80 per cent of the british population are not Christians and do not celebrate christmas as a day of the birth of christ. to me christmas is a time for us all to come together all of us a celebrate the goodness in this world. and for people who say there should be a ban on religious tolerance. why should there be. i cant understand why we should ban tolerance towards people who believe in a god. for this very country was worshiping gods and the devine way before Christianity. i would rather the name by changed to winter solstices celebration because thats what it is all about. to say ban religious tolerance in my books makes you as bad as people who discriminate others in the name of religion. for science and physics still dosnt have all the answers. merry winter solstice to you all and a happy new year

I agree - Xmas is such a pathetic commercial razzamataz - everybody to their own, Christians (those left!) are welcome to celebrate what was a pagan festival but as it's all so artificial, and we made our current calender then I think we should just simply keep to one mid-winter festival at the changing of the year.
