My brother-in-law applied for a job at a wal-mart distribution center. They're starting pay is over $10-12/hr, which is almost as good as you can get around here. He got through all the interviews, and at the last moment was required to fill out a credit check paper. Even though he was well qualified for the job, and had more than enough experience, he didn't get it because Wal-Mart didn't like his credit history....he didn't have enough credit for the job. We're not talking about some high-paying position that might require such a check, we're talking about manual labor....packing boxes to be shipped to wal-mart stores across the southeast. Why the fuck do you need credit to work at wal-mart? The sad part is, this is a small town, mostly mills and shit, and it's hard to get ahead. it's even harder to build good credit when you have a low paying job....could you imagine if this becomes widespread? (hell, it might be more widespread than I know) This doesn't affect people who make 100,000 a year, they're not gonna apply to work at some shithole like wal-mart. There are so many overworked, underpaid struggling families out there though who can barely keep up with their household bills, let alone build up what a company like wal-mart would consider "good' credit. I'm not even sure if this belongs in the globalization forum, but since it deals with wal-mart in particular, I couldn't think of a better one. anyway, rant over.
Actually, companies are looking to see if you are responsible and fulfill obligations. Usually they are not asking for employees with good credit; they just want to see if you have been at least moderately responsible.
Your credit says a lot about your character. I wouldn't want anyone with shitty credit working for me either.
bad credit doesn't always say something about one's character. sometimes someone's situation may force them to use their credit card for all their purchases / take out cash advances for rent, etc. you can't just lump people together like that.
IronGoth said this in response to "Why are people with bad credit denied jobs" "Because people with poor credit often steal to make ends meet." What a load of garbage, IronGoth. With a lot of people, the reason for bad credit often lies in the fact that they may have lost their job, been in the hospital, or the creditors themselves decide to hold payments they receive before the due date until after the due date so that they can assess a late fee because they find it VERY profitable to screw us like that, not to mention they make it damn near impossible to catch up if you miss even one payment. Even if you were to double, triple, or even quadruple your next payment or two after a missed payment, your balance still goes up because they see you as a cash cow. Johnny Bravo
that's a load of BS because my sister and brother-in-law don't have BAD credit, they just didn't have enough credit to satisfy wal-mart. and hi johnny B, how have you been?
Statistically I believe that the majority of Americans are spending more than they make. They have to hire people it just gives them an excuse to discriminate and not be held accountable. Unfortunatly it seems the only way to adress this sort of abuse is to give the government more authourity to dictate to the businesses which can sometimes be worse because governments given more power have the potential to become abusive as well or even more.
I've worked in a warehouse for Rite-Aide. We were required to be "bondable". The bonding company is esenensialy an insurance company, if a bonded employee steals the bonding company pays. Employees with poor credit cost more of a premium to be insured. The acceptible level of poor credit varies with the cost to the parent company (in my case Rite Aid).
really? so when i when my brother killed himself, i became homeless, during which time i was raped, (yes this is all during the same period of time) and i was relly traumatized and couldn't work, thus using my credit card too much, that was due to my poor character?
Oh, absolutely. But in the past, before modern life caught up to us, like back in the 70s when people could feed a family of five on one person's income from the plant, the only people who screwed up credit were the sorts who were really irresponsible. Let's put itthis way, I worked with a girl who signed a bunch of cash advances on herself out of our till (this was allowed). Bits here and there, but come payday (and she was like "oh my gosh when is the boss getting here I need money") he asked her to REPAY $30 cause she'd "paid" herself $30 more than she'd actually earned. Guess what? Money started disappearing from the cash. Instead of fronting herself $20 or whatever, she just stole it. That is the kind of person that got into bad credit in the days before excessive medical bills, housing bubbles and serious reductions in standards of living.
Personally, I like people who don't crack under stress. That doesn't mean there's not a place for you somewhere, it's just not with me.
Dude, grow up a little. You're 20, you've no clue just how fast and how far ANYONE can fall. I've seen people go from $275,000 a year to homeless living out of a car that has to be kept moving cause the repo men are looking for it in four months. These were people with Master's degrees in Engineering, not folks who were on the wrong side of the tracks.
What is it then? You said you were traumatized. I equated trauma with stress, but we can say I like people who don't crack under stress/trauma if you like.
