Hi, I am a 17 year old guy living in South East Asia, and in the last 6 months I have become increasingly unhappy with the state of my life. I am looking for advice on what I should do next: I'm looking to leave the country on some kind of back-packing trail. Or I want to join a commune of some description. Can anyone please help me out with how I would get started on any of those two things?

I would think the best thing to do would be to have a destination in mind. There's nothing wrong with free-range wandering, but vaguely not knowing where you're going puts a damper on gear planning. Hiking across mainland Asia without warm gear and shelter would be a bad idea. Hiking out of hot, humid Southeast Asia carrying 70+ pounds of gear doesn't sound like a good time to me either.

With respect to communal living, you can find a small group living situation almost anywhere. I have friends who share land in WV and rarely even see each other and I have friends who jointly own a co-op in Washington DC, they farm on the rooftop, cook communally at every meal and live strictly vegan. if ur looking to take a nice backpacking trip, i suggest uget a plainticket, come to the states, and hike the Appilaician Trail. its a beautiful hike! takes about 6 monthes for the average through hiker, and goes from Georgia up to Main. its incredibly peaceful, and u meet a loads of awsome people! i've done the
Massichusits section and i plain to do the rest evedually probably insections.
but u should think about it, its a wonderful experience!
