Any suggestions for a good tried-and-true baby sling? Something I can use out or around the house and would be useful when breastfeeding as well? I've seen so many, and read reviews on many, but I don't want to end up with something uncomfortable that I wont use. I would like to have something useful and comfortable for both me and baby that keeps him close to me throughout the day.
I'd do a simple ring-sling for nursing and such. I have a no-jo. It's good, but on my plus-size body it's a bit short. But it worked well when she was tiny and I was still nursing.
I just ordered one of these... haven't gotten it yet, but it looks nifty! http://store.attachedtobaby.com/detail.aspx?ID=18
do you have access to a sewing machine? They are really easy to make. Just takes two rings from www.slingrings.com (or elsewhere) and 2.5 yards of fabric. I prefer a pleated shoulder, it's more comfortable for my back. I started out using a variation of these directions: http://www.mayawrap.com/sewSling.shtml and then found this site: http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/sling.html except I don't make pleats that way, I just use an iron and some masking tape, which also gives me a straight line to sew alongside.
I have a Hotsling and it is really easy to use. I use it whenever we are out of the house, or when she wants to be held at home. She usually falls asleep immediately when she gets in it. I have not tried breastfeeding her in it, but it is supposed to work. This is the one I have: http://www.hotslings.com/Catalog/product.php?id=136
I made my own, and it worked great. I don't really even know how to sew very well. I am planning on making another one for the new baby. I gave the other one away.
we went christmas shopping in the "big city" yesterday. We left at 8am and didn't get home until close to 9pm. Mandred spent most of the day in the sling. He watched people, enjoyed the lights, flirted with sales staff and had a couple really nice long naps while in his sling. He even breastfeed from the sling. It was nice not to have to deal with the stroller with the crowds. I lost track of how many women I saw lugging around one of those car seat/carrier things! Eleven ladies came up to me to ask me about my sling... where I got it, if its complicated, if Manny likes it. Think I may have turned a few mothers onto babywearing! the wrap I got from Moby rocks!
ITP, I know just what you mean. When Moire and I went back to my home town, it seemed like the women had just seen what heaven could be like, looking at Moire in her sling. She was happy and content, smiley, and never fussed. And the mommas with the big old baby buckets didn't know what to think. So I just gave them the names of several brands, websites, stores, and the costs and let them know it was an investment in their kids and their sanity. Also, I've noticed the difference in people at places like Costco and WholeFoods. The people at Costco say "Wow, I wish I had one of those when I had my kids!" and the people at WholeFoods say, "Wow, I remember that was such a lifesaver when my kids were tiny!"
Totally! I had Grandma's coming up to me wanting to know where I got it, and they all looked totally dejected when I said I ordered it from the internet... until I wrote down the website addy for them! So many Mom's came up to me asking me about it because they were looking for a better solution. One said that she hadn't seen a happier baby all day... I replied "of course he is happy. He is warm, cuddled, comfortable AND it smells like lunch!". I felt like a walking talking commercial for baby wearing and it was wonderful!
What about a sorong? I've seen people use them but how would you go about it? Has anyone tried it and what do you think?
