Yesterday.....there was a broken small egg on top of our car, and a dead baby bird on the ground.....the size of a bald quarter.... There is a nest up in the rafters of the carport, i thought. Today, the pugs were gathered around something in the kitchen.....(obviously the cat brought it in)....and I cleared them away to see what it was...an infant bird...still alive and kicking very much so..... I rescued it, and put it in a warm room in the warmest room of the house for now in the folds of a fleece blanket while i went to vote for bernie...and yay, I feel good about voting for Bernie..... on the way to the voting, i stopped at a feed store that specializes in animals to find out what i could do for this little infant bird. I was told to find the nest and put it back in there......or mash up a worm and feed it to it with a dropper in tiny amounts every 15 mins from sunrise to sunset, or call the wildlife people who specialize in birds......all good options.... Further along on the way to the voting place, there was a sign as clear as day in front of a place....blood worms for sale...so we stopped and bought a dozen in a cup of dirt for $3.00.....That was a sign, if i ever saw one, without even looking for it....... Back home....we took the ladder and found what could be the nest...with nothing left in it......I had found another little infant just before we looked with the ladder, that is bleeding and is still barely alive, but I doubt this one will make it much longer. I have both birds in the folds of the blanket now. After several phone calls, i learned alot...and they will need antibiotics if a cat even had their saliva on them....so I found a lady that specializes in birds only and called her and left a message and am waiting to hear back from her......I will bring the survivor or survivors to her, if I have to. She has all of the antibiotics and things needed.....and goes around teaching people about all kinds of birds. I also mashed up one of the smallest worms that looked half dead and not as active as the other worms...and that was the worst part of all of this, and have been feeding drop fulls of it to the strong alive and kicking one...but even that is a risk, I have come to learn, as these birds may not even eat worms, I was told by one person.... i am doing the best i can for now...and will continue to do so...until i hear back from the woman...i so hope to hear from soon...here is the strong alive and kicking one in the palm of my hand.... I have no idea what kind of birds these are....
It's too young... Unless you are experienced at birds this young, it's not going to make it. Food along with electrolytes from the mother needs to be inserted directly into the gullet, it's too young to know how to swallow on it's own. Without the electrolytes which come from the mother's stomach just mashed up worms isn't enough. A bird this young really needs to be dealt with by a professional...
Obviously, Ty...and I am not a professional. That is why I am desparately waiting to hear back form the woman in this area who is the professional.....as the minutes keep ticking away here. Badly injured bird is gone, and I just fed the other one who is swallowing and spitting out excess..again. At least, i have learned since Orison told me it was a robin, that worms are ok...I know this bird will not survive very long with just me....Wish for this bird, please, the lady calls soon.
OK, out the door now, as soon as Stan is finished with map quest....We will be traveeling a ways. I got tired of waiting so i called the second number I was given. The first lady told her about my call...She should have called me and told me to call this second lady, and I would not have waitied 3 hours to hear back........She is not doing infant birds anymore, but second lady is.....who has antibiotics, etc...and has cared for 200 infant birds in the last year alone.....so on the way to there.....with survivor....and she said please do not feed it anymore....ok, back later.
Yeah, me, too, Scratcho. Infant bird is in best possible hands in the area now, at least. On a tissue on a towel, on a heating pad, that was made very warm before we left, in a shoebox, we travelled the infant bird to the professional....about an hour drive away....Nice, elegant, classy, older, attractive lady met us outside of her stone house.....and took the bird out of the shoe box and thanked me for following her instructions for travel......She even exlaimed..."Oh, the box is still warm!....".....bird's mouth was gaping wide open for more food the entire trip...a good sign...At twilight and first glance, she said she thought the bird was either a wren or a finch...We did not visit.....We gave her a generous donation for what she does, and were on our way. I liked her, and immediately had faith in her for the bird. She knows what she is doing.........even only seeing her in person for about 2 minutes.....I liked her. On the way there....there was a magnificent cloud formation of huge angel wings like I never saw before, and I exclaimed...."Bird wings!"...."we are on the right path for this bird!" I will call her in a day or two for an update.
PS Before we left with the bird, I took the cup of worms and dumped it in the mud by the stream...another looked dead....the others were big and fat.....so now some may become other bird food or make it.....At least, I don't have to mortar and pestal another one of those.....lol
The baby bird is still alive and hanging in there! I called the next day and it was ok still and just talked to the lady a few mins ago, and bird is still hanging in there, which means its chances to grow to adult are very good now. I hate to keep bothering the lady, so I will check with her in another week or so, but YAY! The bird god is smiling at me, but the worm god is not....and that fiasco with the worm still bothers me, too,.
Baby bird is going to make it. I just spoke to the lady. Baby bird has feathers now, and is almost ready to be released.....Now, with certainty, i am told the bird is a wren...... hallalujah. it is nice to be number 1 to something.....grown up wren photo from the internet.
Yes, wrens are very pretty, aren;t they?....beautiful birds.... I noticed many birds on the trails today, as there has been much rainfall lately, so they were all busy catching worms. i witnessed a robin pulling a worm out of the ground today...poor worm.... It was really something to celebrate the good news about this little bird...all the team effort for this little bird. I know the worm I fed it in drops was the beginning of its comeback, as it seemed to be dieing before, but little by little, it started opening its mouth for more, and then to be placed in such expert, remarkable, loving hands.....truly a wonderful story.
