I'm thinkin on taking a 2-week "Sabbatical" in Mexico this summer. Acapulco looks real nice, but I'm not sure. Where's the best place I can go to find some artistic inspiration without making me completely and totally poor right before school starts?

Yeah, man, don't go to Acapulco, especially now. There are lots of beautiful places in southeastern Mexico.

Mexico... a good place to go to get beaten, robbed or killed.

Yes, stay and sit on your ass drinking beer all day like Matt here, that's the way to live!

Now... Mexico has lots of lovely places, I would visit the ruins first and foremost, you can truly feel the energy around those places... and then, there are lots of small beach towns... stay away from Acapulco, Cancun, and such tourist spots. Go out and find the true Mexican culture, not the Americanised one.

You are NOT going to get robbed, beaten nor killed !! Mexico is awesome. Watch what you are doing. Good place to go... San Carlos just about 20 miles north and west of Guymas. NICE habor.. good beaches, shrimp tacos... not the huge crowds. I love it there !!

I agree with headin south. you are not going to be robbed, raped, or kidnapped here. it is more likely to happen in the US than here. just look at the crime statistics the violent crime in the US is random, here it is confined to the police, military, and cartel members. for the most part civilians are safe.
I have been here 4 years without indecent. my 19 year old daughter lives in the city(Merida) and i feel she is safer here than any place in the US.

mexico is amazing and i have been there 3 times now, travelling all over and i never had one insecure moment. the people have been nothing but kind and helpful, offering free accomodations and good company! everywhere in mexico is beautiful but cancun is only good if you are A) a drunken fratboy type or B) a mexican looking for employment.

I want to go back to Mexico VERY much, but older brother is SO worried
that something will happen. I keep telling him that Green Tortoise is still
offering Mexico tours. Not as many as they used to but still three of them.

My next trip down I would like to go to a Spanish language school, artsy
colony/school or a 'learn to swim/play a guitar' type place... any ideas?
    peace and paz!

Schedule your trip before the rainy season starts in October and snorkel or dive with sea turtles and other reef life off the wide beaches in Akumal. Or, if your're up for a challenge, go in December and dive off Playa with migrating bull sharks. Visit the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and the Tankah community.
