Noah has this terrible diaper rash that has been driving everyone crazy.... It wakes him up at night, he can hardly walk around, plus he's started having these little almost poops that are just enough to really irritate him. We've been using Desitin and Baby Gold Bond powder, but it just seems to be getting worse. He's been running around naked to air out, too, but nothing really seems to be working. What am I supposed to do??? He wakes up at night going, "Ow! Ow!" and it makes me want to cry....
Dont use Desitin, it always made it worse for Gaea!! BAD DESITIN BAD! Use some A&D it is goooood stuff. And also if you can. Let him air out. Be lax about the diaper and just let him round around bottomless. The moisture trapped in the diaper will only make it worse, and make it heal slower. After he takes his poop set him free! Good Luck
Boudeau's Butt Paste. It's the best stuff. You can get it at little neighborhood type pharmacies. The big ones won't carry it. I got it at a little Jewish Pharmacy. Kathi
Happy, can you describe the rash? Flat, red, raised, bumps with white tips, around the anus, over the whole diaper area, etc, etc.? It's hard to suggest something without knowing what caused the rash, it could be yeast, it could be urine, it could be heat, it could be allergic.
Also, for future reference, what kind of diapers are you using? The regular kind - Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, all those major brands - are loaded with chlorine and chemicals that many babies are seriously sensitive to. If you're using those, maybe try switching to Seventh Generation or another organic brand, or to cloth if you can...
It's just a flat red rash between his legs and a little on his butt. It kind of spreads to his legs a little, just outside of his diaper. I think he's wearing Huggies right now. I have used Boudreaux's, but we ran out a while ago and my mom bought the Desitin.
I agree with A&D. It clears up Virginia's rashes in like half the time as Desitin would. It also has multiples uses! I put it under her nose when she has a cold to keep her little nose from getting sore. If you see little bumps with the white tips (like Brighid was describing), they look like little pimples...it could be a fungal infection (yeastie). You'll need to get a prescription antifungal cream like Nystatin. I keep a tube on hand because Virginia gets them a lot.
yup, gotta agree wholeheartedly there - also, really good stuff is Bag Balm - you can get it at most pharmacies, it's and antibiotic ointment that comes in a green can. that stuff is magic. my older boys & my hubby also use it when they get heat rash, works miracles on them too!
I love Desitin, but it does NOT work on yeast caused rash (I think Brig and I are thinking the same thing here) A yeast rash will not respond to regualar OTC diaper rash creams of any kind. A combination antifungal and topical steroid is really the best for yeast. Giving the baby some Bifidus bacteria supplement is also helpful.(NPT yogurt, the sugars and dairy in yogurt will only make the yeast worse, use a powedered supplement that he can lick off of your finger.) Is he breastfed? Becasause the Bifidus is better absorbed in BF babies. It could also be a food allergy. Usually in food allergy rashes, it is red, and there may be sores, and there is a red ring around the anus. Start by eliminating dairy. Do this for at least a month. It takes this long to get the Bovine A lactoalbumin protein out of his system. (BTW, breastmilk is NOT a "dairy product" but if your baby is sensitive to dairy you will want to eliminate it from your diet as well.) The next thing to eliminate is peanuts and wheat. This is actually harder than dairy. It can take months to discover a food allergy, but an elimination diet is really the only way to do it. It also takes weeks before you notice any improvement, so don't give up after a few days. "Cutting down" on allergenic foods (especially dairy) doesn't work, it has to be completely out of the diet. See your HCP to see if it is yeast first, though. It is much easier to treat than a food allergy. Good luck.
my noah just had a bad one too... The doc told me that if its yeast it will be really bad in the fold from his leg to his body. I agree w/ everyone and say A&D works great...its what finally got rid of the rash.
I always used A+D or balmex.... yeast infection creams usually work well too. They also help with the pain/itching...or at least they always worked with my children.
