I went to a GP today to talk about my depression. He wants to put me on some antidepressants. I've read up that MAOIs + MDMA is a bad combination and told him that I take recreational drugs such as MDMA and he said he'd put me on a drug that will be compatible.

So I have a prescription for aurorix. I've come home tonight to find that almost every web page (erowid & wiki included) strongly recommend against taking aurorix and any other MAOI.

The strange thing is that the doctor said that this one is an MAOI but it's unique in that it doesn't inhibit seratonin uptake, so it doesn't have the same problems. I'm inclined to believe wiki, erowid and the 10,000 other web sites that say he is wrong.

So I'm stuck. I want to try solve this depression, but I don't want to give up MDMA. It seems that aurorix works for about 16 hours after ingestion, so perhaps not taking it for a few days before taking mdma will be fine. I have another appointment with him in a week, so I'll take this up with him...

Has anyone else had their doctor tell them aurorix is okay with MDMA? Has anyone had experience with this? Are there antidepressants similar to aurorix that don't have the bad interactions with MDMA?

you could always try a different route altogether which doesn't involve anti-depressant medication.

there are a surprising number of therapies for depression that don't involve meds.

I'm considering that as well. Either stopping mdma or not doing the anti depressants. Over the years I have tried exercise, changing diet, sleeping more, the usual things that the internet suggests. My mother has similar problems to me and tried many things for years. Her problems subsided when she finally saw a GP and started on meds.

I've been reading some more and found that aurorix is an RIMA which is like an MAOI but reversible... I guess that's what the doctor was talking about when he said that it doesn't inhibit seratonin reuptake. Some journal articles say that RIMAs have a decreased risk compared to MAOIs... So I guess he's mitigating the risk, but it's not precluded entirely... Now I can at least understand why he thought aurorix would be a better choice, but I still can't explain why he thinks it'll be safe to take them both.

Fortunately the drug's effects are completely out from the body after 24 or so hours... so provided its safe to stop and start on occasion I guess I'll be right.
