Okay, here's the deal:: My family & I are attending a good friend's wedding tomorrow night. When my mother went into my brother's closet to get his suit, she found his jacket still on the hanger in plastic, but found his pants rumpled in a ball on the floor. As soon as she picked them up, she noticed holes near the back pocket (mind you, this is a brand new $300 suit that he's only worn once). She came to me to ask if I could repair it, but I'm not sure what I should do. Here are pictures::

Until she can take it to a professional tailor, I need to do something for the wedding tomorrow. My only thought is to put a patch on it & hope that the jacket is long enough to cover his butt, but I don't want to do anything too permanent if the tailor has a different way of repairing it.

The other problem is, although the picture doesn't show it too well, the colour of the suit is more of an olive greenish/grey & I'm not sure if I can find a patch that will match.

Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance! I love you guys!

I'd suggest basting a temporary patch INTO the pocket to simply stop the "bleed" from behind the holes.... just a thought, something dark should work even if it doesn't match perfectly.

wow, odd, did a cat attack it or something?

yeah, a temporary patch behind the material might work ok. the jacket should cover his butt for the most part.

We don't even have a cat, just dogs! Its not like it was from moths because all of his other clothes are fine & we've never had a problem with them!

What do you mean by "basting"? I'm not familar with the term. Also, the pocket itself is seperate from the material of the back leg of the pants.

    Thank you!

is there any fabric you can cut to make a lil patch?...mebbie in the hem or pockets, just a lil piece? then you can use that fusable paper to make a lil patch on the inside.i bet you could even use a similar fabric to cover it from the inside..cuz the main problem is the lining showing thru the holes...
i dunno..thats just my take on it...good luck

basting like take long stitches that are temporary and will be easy for the tailor to remove. ;)

yes, i agree you should baste a dark patch onto the white pocket lining this will not correct the hole in the pants-leave that for the tailor. It will simply help camoflage the wholes that are in the pants and you may want to tack the pocket lining to the pants with a single stitch so it doesn't roll up at some point later in the evening and leave the holes noticable.

You might also add some fray check to the holes if they look as though they may fray. You can test the fray check on the inside of the pants hem to see if it will discolour the pants material in anyway and bring attention to the holes- bc/s you don't want that. All you can do is a temporary fix at this point and leave the permenant fix for a tailor that isn't under the time/stress constraints of a wedding. :)

Those really look like moth holes. I had them on clothes I don't wear often. Use lavendar filled mini pillows, moths don't like that, and lay them into the plastic covers.

Darning is when you turn the garment inside out, secure the stiching at one end of the hole then you sew from one side of the whole to the other (so width ways if the hole is thinner than longer)

so if you are coming from the top side of the fabric put your needly through the hole and up through the fabric on the other side.

Then from the up side put it back through the hole the the bottom side of the first half of the hole and push it up through the fabric. etc etc .... its very hard to explain but very easy to do.
