Anyone who has ever watched the powerful, classic drama "To Kill A Mockingbird" comes away knowing that it takes tremendous courage and determination to fight a battle you know you are, in all probability, going to lose. Gregory Peck's "Atticus" was indeed larger than life; here was a man who kept on fighting against all odds, fighting with every ounce of courage within him, to clear the name of an innocent man of color, wrongly accused of a crime he did not commit. Seeing Atticus, reacting to the news of "Tom's" death, truly tears at your very soul; what torment he must have been feeling inside. Atticus Finch, I feel, is indeed a "historical" hero whose determination, honesty, and integrity are timeless, and, indeed, still ring true in today's troubled times of civil unrest and mistrust. Recall, also, Mr. Peck's performance as "Atticus" was so profound and powerful on the big screen, that many young men, after seeing the film, later went to law school, to follow in Atticus' footsteps. Atticus Finch.......a "historical" hero for today.......and, indeed, beyond........
If the example of Mr. Finch does indeed inspire, it will be among all of we small individuals to act, behave, and think more mindfully as we go about the mundane tasks and interactions of our day.
Agreed, 100%. We "small" people, I truly believe, are capable of tremendous acts of good, if we but have faith in our abilities, our common sense, and our hearts. Atticus was indeed a shining example of what a "common" man could do, when a serious situation brought him to the forefront to fight for a just cause......... "Live long and prosper"
The fear springs forth when confronted with a greater evil, when standing up to it risks the loss of something personal. It is to ask, "How much skin am I gonna lose here?"
Today finding a lawyer willing to do the right thing, would be a miracle. It's all about money. Bob Dylan sang a song Hurricane. Tells the truth about our judicial system.
Well said. That the character of "Atticus Finch" made such a powerful impact on the movie audiences of the day, leading many young men to seek a future as a lawyer indeed speaks many volumes. Today, sadly, the judicial system (like so much these days) is mostly a sad pardody of what it once was. In those days, at least in the movies, the bad guys always paid for their crimes, and the good guys were the heroes. The stalwart example shown by "Atticus" is still, I feel, a high and noble ideal that ALL men should still strive to achieve, regardless of their positions in life......... "Live long and prosper"
