Apparently the military is trying to oust Erdogan's crazy fundamentalist ass. I support any attempt to oust a dictator. Hopefully whoever replaces him is more secular if the whole coup thing works out. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/15/turkey-low-flying-jets-and-gunfire-heard-in-ankara1/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link
I don't like Erdogan or any fundamentalist leader. I don't like military dictatorships either, such as the one in Egypt. Ordinary people should not have to live according to military orders, no more than they should have to comply with the religion of a majority.
Although a big suprise, we can't say he didn't ask for it. Just watching this on the news after someone pointed it out to me there's a military coup in Turkey. I thought wtf :-D
I'm waiting to hear more about what's behind the coup. I figure Russia would like the European front to change dramatically.
Crazy. TV says there are tanks on the freeways and such. I didn't get the full story because I was at the gym with no audio, but I did get that there is a huge military presence and that it has to do with a coup. What is a coup btw? I'm afraid that if I google it that the explanation will be complicated gibberish. Is it just where someone overthrows the government? Nice that we have a word for that. I understand that this hasn't been the first such instance. In the last century there have been relatively many coups of the Turkish leadership.
a coup, or an overthrow, is the sudden and forced seizure of a state, usually instigated by a small group of the existing government establishment/military) to depose the established regime and replace it with a new ruling body...
As of now the coup does not seem to be going so well. The state TV has been retaken by the people. The tanks are surrounded by masses of people and they are pulling the troopers out of the tanks... I am seeing this on RT News now at 5:14 PM Pacific time. https://www.rt.com/news/351345-turkey-coup-military-ankara/
explosion hits Turkish parliament in #Ankara. https://twitter.com/thevocaleurope/status/754109842722267136
It wouldn't surprise the crap out of me if Erdogan staged this himself as a pretext to seize more power. I think he's used accusations of a coup attempt before to do the same.
Yup, coup seems to be mostly under control. What a shame too, this could have been a much more exciting Friday. Seriously though, only bad will come out of this, as now Erdogan can further consolidate his reign and purge the ranks. Goodbye Democracy, one way or the other.
I agree that all that a failed overthrow does is strengthen Edrogan's power and legitimicy now to tighten up his rule and to elminate his opponents (as he was already busy with). But really, if the coup would have succeeded it could have gone either way as well. There is no certainty at all that there would have been reason for joy. I also would like to see Erdogan gone, but not if he gets replaced by some regime equally oppresive or even worse
Now Erdogan wants the USA to hand over Gulen. Was Gulen behind this? Ah we'll probably never know, but I never liked the guy much. Oh Erdy
