I've been thinking about you. Lots of videos on the news about your situation.

Our local schools were closed for the past two days in anticipation of below zero temperatures and severe wind chills and not wanting kids waiting for busses out in that cold. They have even been known to close schools in advance of severe storm warnings. Hopefully this will bring about changes in your state about how to deal with predicted storms. Seeing all those cars sitting on the highways just makes me shiver.

I live in ATL. It took my fiance 5 hours to drive home. It usually only take 30-45 min depending on traffic. I was off work yesterday and couldn't go in today. Its a mess. It looks like the Walking Dead here. Abandoned cars everywhere.

It's really hard for me to take 2 inches of snow seriously. We have surprise snow that amounts to more than that. The only reason I feel bad for you guys at all is I understand that ATL isn't prepared to handle weather like that. I hope all of you and your loved ones are safe.

Our kids schools were closed all day yesterday.

My son, daughter-in-law, and daughter got home before it got real bad.

My niece spent 12 hours getting home.

There was one local fatality. A high school age boy died yesterday evening. His pick up slid into a tree. Three of his passengers are going to be okay. One of his passengers is in serious condition.

We're lucky that none of our immediate family had to travel across town on those interstate highways and main thoroughfares yesterday.

No school tomorrow and I'm doubtful they will go on Friday either because it's not getting warm enough to melt the ice on the roads.

A friend of mine, a New England transplant, lives in Atlanta. She did mention it taking 4 hours to get home and laughed at the Georgia's inability to manage snow. I understand the chaos, especially if you aren't used to snow: it takes a lot of money to maintain plows and roads, why spend the money if it happens so rarely?

Joke is on New England, if you ask me. No one should have to be used to constant, horrible winter weather!

I have a friend who was stuck in traffic in Atlanta for 7 hours and finally decided to abandon his vehicle and walk the last 5 miles.

I have always loved Atlanta but this makes me really glad I don't live in Atlanta. I don't see how you guys handle the traffic on a regular day, much less a day like yesterday.

This is exactly it. No one down here has snow tires or snow chains. The roads aren't salted beforehand, only the busiest roads are salted afterwards. We also don't get thick powdery snow which is easier to drive in, we maybe get an inch of snow and then everything turns into a solid sheet of ice as soon as the sun goes down.

Well, I'd guess you'd call me a Yankee since I've lived in Boston for over 40 years. As a Red Sox fan, I would never call myself that.

Not many around here are laughing at Atlanta's lack of preparation. Mainly, we think that climate change is causing more and more extreme weather and we had all better get ready for it. There will be more droughts, floods, hurricanes, tornados, wild fires, extreme heat, and extreme cold. Climate change, along with higher energy prices, is going to have a lot of unpleasant effects on our lives. The time for action was about 15 years ago. It's too late now.

Nah, it's only some people who are laughing. I don't know the author of the blog I cited in the OP so I don't know who or what he refers to specifically.

I did just happen across this-

-however, I was looking at pics of people sleeping in Home Depots lawn chairs inside their stores.

I saw a small pic of the guys that had out all the lawn chairs at Home Depot. It was in a collage pic on the weather channel.

I couldn't pull it off the page so I got this one instead. It's not as good, but sort of.

    It's damn huge though.
