Hi everyone I have always been interested in electional astrology - also called the astrology of timing. It's all about selecting a good day to initiate something so that a positive outcome is more likely. The Moon plays an important role in electional astrology and she should be in good alignment with the other planets. When the Moon is void-of-course it is not considered a good time to start something new.
This is something I've been studying. The trick is that the Moon can't be afflicted at all, plus the appropriate planetary significators have to be strong and unafflicted. It's harder than it sounds.
hello everyone found something really interesting - an iphone app on electional astrology. it has some pretty good reviews so if anyone is interested check the itunes app store under astrology.
yes i agree - electional astrology is not as easy as one thinks. i have a very good book if you're interested - 'electional astrology the art of timing' the author is j hampar and it's the best i've found on the subject. the moon is very important in electional work and she must be as strong as possible which includes strong by sign, in good aspect to other planets meaning unafflicted, and not void-of-course. the book i mentioned gives a thorough explanation of all the rules. whoever posted about the iphone app on electional astrology - can you give us the name of the app? thanks.
hey phoenix it's 2009 electional astrology planning guide. you can find it by selecting app store on your iphone and then doing a search with the word 'astrology' and it comes up in the top five. there are lots of iphone apps but this is the only one about electional astrology - pretty cool
thanks for the info. i was interested to learn a bit more about this iphone app on electional astrology. the description in the itunes store is quite extensive and it has a high rating. it gives daily forecasts based on electional astrology and defines the quality of each day in the year. it also shows the moon's daily aspects, when the moon is void-of-course and planetary aspects on the screen with the daily guidance. it looks very attractive and i imagine it would be a fun app to have on your iphone. i may just have to get it. if anyone has purchased it please let us know how you like it.
hello all the planning guide lists tomorrow apr 23 as a good day with the moon in aries making no difficult aspects and the sun in taurus trine pluto. a determined self-confident attitude works well. everyone is willing to pull together and go the extra mile. 2009 electional astrology planning guide in the itunes app store http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=304849037&mt=8
hello enlil indeed elections are done for a specific purpose but electional astrology can also be used to identify the quality of each day in the year. it uses the rules of horary astrology and examines the moon in relation to the planets, as well as the planets in relation to each other for each day in the year. for example when the moon and planets are well aligned on any particular day it is categorized as a 'good day' and the outcome of whatever is initiated has a good chance for success. however when the moon and planets are in difficult alignment it is categorized as a 'challenging day' making it more difficult to have success with whatever is initiated. if you want to learn a bit more about this branch of astrology a good book is "electional astrology the art of timing" - the author is j hampar. the iphone app i mentioned uses this branch of astrology and in my opinion is worth it's weight in gold because this kind of information is usually only available to professional astrologers and their clients
I'm sort of the board traditionalist it seems! Electional, horary, natal, and mundane have different techniques, though the foundation is basically the same. An election actually means to find the time to do something. It absolutely doesn't use horary techniques. If you use horary techniques on an electional chart, then it's not an electional chart anymore. It's a horary. If you pull up a chart "do give the quality of the day", how does that apply to anyone? That kind of chart has no bearing with any predictive technique having to do with natal or mundane. You CAN do event charts which are similar to horary in practice. However, these are based on specific events for a specific time and place (such as an arrest). There is an important traditional concept called "rooting". A chart must be rooted to be considered valid. A natal chart is rooted because it is based on the birth of a person. A mundane chart is also rooted because it is made for the birth of a place. A horary is rooted because it is made for the birth of a question. An electional chart is not in itself rooted. In order to make it rooted, it must be connected to another rooted chart. I'll give a couple of examples. Let's say you want to get married. One can make an election to time the marriage. What if the person shows that they aren't getting married in the natal? No election will make that marriage propitious. It won't stop the marriage from happening, but it can't make the marriage sucessful. Let's say you want to do a planetary ritual to take advantage of the Sun being exalted in Aries. You can elect that time, but it won't gurantee the ritual will be successful. In order to do this, you have to do a horary first. If the horary says yes, then the election will be successful. Here's a non-astrological example. Let's say the car you always wanted is on sale for $10,000. You will never see a deal like this again. Unfortunately you lost your job and can barely make rent. You can't afford the car. An election is like that sale. It says "now is the best time". It doesn't do anything else. I've seen modern electional techniques. If you follow the modern methods, they will fail the traditional ones. Traditional techniques are much more rigorous.
hello again perhaps we can agree to disagree. electional and horary astrology employ a very different set of rules than either natal or mundane astrology. for example in horary astrology the moon is one of the primary significators and is allowed all applying aspects to help determine the answer to a question. likewise in electional astrology the moon's applying aspects are very important and in particular her final aspect which describes the outcome of the elected matter. this technique is not used in natal or mundane astrology. and yes both horary and electional astrology employ the same set of rules and they are usually studied in consort. the only difference being that horary looks at the matter after the fact while election approaches the matter before the fact. each day has an energy of it's own. you can use a sunrise chart for any day and see that some days are better than others in terms of harmonious planetary alignments and this is the astrology we are talking about - the astrology of timing. thanks for your interesting comments. they are always appreciated
hey phoenix newbie here am a long-time student of horary and electional and studied with gilbert navarro. the same rules are applied in both practices lol . . . .
Horary is often done before the matter happens. In fact it's usually done that way, unless you are trying to find more details on a past event. William Lilly, probably the greatest English horary astrology ever has a whole book on it! Horary is predictive pure and simple. Professional horary astrologers such as John Frawley, Lee Lehman, and Chris Warnock do almost nothing but predictions. Electional is simply finding the best time to do something. You can't even graduate their horary courses until you've made a prediction that comes true. You can't graduate their electional courses until you've made an election that has a successful outcome. Let me walk you through why I have a problem with what you are saying. An electional chart is finding the best time to do something. A horary chart is made for the time and place the astrologer understands a specific question. Let's say someone wants to find the best time to get married. We find a great time 6 months from now when the ruler of the 1st applies to a trine to the ruler 7th. Both are strong and angular, and the Moon, also strong applies to a sextile to the ruler of the 7th. You sit down with the client and tell them 6 months, blah blah blah. Suddenly the client asks you if the marriage will be successful. First time they asked you. You can't use the electional, since the whole premise is to find the best time to get married. Of course it's going to be good! Plus the chart is for a future time. It's 6 months away. The question was asked 6 months before the event that was elected. You have to make a chart for the time the client posed the question. In other words, now. Even if the question is "what challenges will we face?", while a bit vague, is still a current question. If you look at the electional chart, you won't find any challenges since the ruler of the 7th and 1st are great. Nothing challenges them. If the question is "will we have children", again it's a new question. New chart. You can't use the electional chart, since again the question was already asked 6 months prior to what it shows. In other words you get a mess. I graduated Chris Warnock'c courses and no they can't be combined lol... Thanks for your wonderful argument.
hi everyone i'm happy to see a good discussion here. i agree enlil that horary and electional are two different approaches. however what i think honeybee is saying and I agree is that most astrologers teach horary astrology with electional astrology as an adjunct because the rules are the same only applied differently. this is how i was taught and i am a graduate of the Ivy Goldstein-Jacobson course in Horary/electional astrology and certified in this area. i think if you ask chris warnock he will clarify it for you. thanks again for an interesting discussion.
hi everyone the planning guide app on my iPhone advises that we are coming up on a cycle that occurs three times a year. it is mercury retrograde and since the planet mercury has rulership over communication in all forms we can expect certain mixups and misunderstandings during this cycle. mercury is also associated with the signing of documents and agreements and it is recommended that these activities be delayed until mercury is again direct. the cycle lasts for approximately three weeks. the beginning and ending dates are listed as are recommendations as to how to work with this cycle. 2009 Electional Astrology Planning Guide for your iPhone and iPod Touch iTunes Store
I'm not going to get into what Chris would or wouldn't say. However, I can tell you that while horary and electional, and indeed all of astrology has the same basic building blocks, the rules are different. There is a tendency in modern astrology to blend things into a mush. That's why I like traditional. It has clear rules. Horary does "ABC", and electional does "XYZ". This has nothing to do with me thinking "older is better". However, I don't like confusion. As someone who does horary, I can tell you electional is much more difficult and quite different. At least traditionally speaking.
hey phoenixrising just read about that mercury retrograde cycle and wanted to ask you a question. can i sign a lease renewal since my original lease was drawn at the right time? thanks for your help.

hi mooninaquarius if your original lease was signed at the right time a renewal can be signed during a mercury retrograde cycle - though you should check the fine print and make certain nothing was omitted.
the planet Mercury assumes apparent retrograde motion early tomorrow morning and this cycle is in effect for the rest of the month. equipment failures are common during this cycle as are mixups and mistakes in communications.
