So my dream of moving to CO may become a reality. I may teach in Denver. What areas of Denver should I avoid moving to? I was on craigslist looking for apartments and geez the cost of renting an apartment is MUCH lower than PA. This wouldn't happen until summer 2009.

Depends on where you teach, if you'll drive or take public transport, etc.
Know a quadrant of the metro?

Downtown is ghetto so is Commence city but they are not as bad as eastern cities. If you compare Denver to eastern cities it is like a little hick town.

Like dumminmama was saying you have to know the quadrant one side of a section can be nice and the other side can be ghetto.

I am not sure where I will teach, but I know it has to be a Title 1 school so that I can get my loans forgiven. Title 1 schools mean that the school has high levels of poverty or special education students. I will most likely drive to where I will be teaching. I would like to live in an area near natural food stores and/or a park. I'm from Philly, so the crime can't be compared to Denver by any means. Thanks for all of your help.

If you’re from Philly Denver will seem like a safe place, there is not really anywhere that are extremely dangerous there a few place that it wouldn’t be a good idea to go in the middle of the night on foot or to leave your car parked all night but nothing really bad.

I only go to Denver a couple of times a year, it is really patchy you can be in one area full of pawn shops and cheap and hotels and drive 3 miles down the road and you are in a neighborhood with organic food stores, BMWs and art galleries.

Rent is pretty good in Denver also you can rent a good one bedroom for around $450. if you look around.

The key is just taking a little time and finding a good neighborhood, the good rentals are usually a little tougher to find.

Wow, $450. Thanks a lot for the info. I can't wait to make the big move. I fell in love with CO when I was out there.

I haven't seen an apartment I'd be willing to live in for $450. A studio maybe.
Some high $500s and low $600s are fine.
Denver and environs has loads of parks. Even yuppie sprawl has loads of parks.
Remember, Denver was dedicated to preserving land, even outside of the city, for residents' use. Red Rocks is part of the park system.
    Look up Whole Foods
Wild Oats (now a combined ownership)
    Vitamin Cottage
those are the most likely suspects for natural foods.
King Soopers, a part of Kroger now, has some minimal bulk, a small section of organics and carries Denver Tofu in many locations.
Getting local (if conventionally grown) is popular for some produce.
Let us know the districts you are looking at .
I will tell you this: don't work in the Eastern Plains communities. Bennett, Strasburg, Byers, Deer Trail, Agate. and east, of course.

Avoid Aurora, if you can, but it's be OK, but not that great.
With special ed, you have a large range of options, as there is open enrollment even out of district.

I would probably look into capitol hill area, The heights neighborhood on the west side of I-25, and even some areas along west colfax. They are kind of up and coming neighborhoods with lots of cool hip people. I have an apartment way on the north side of town ( 120th and Washington) and it is way to far away from anything, I used to live in the Stapleton redevelopment area on the east side of town and it was pretty nice, very pedestrian friendly and a close walk to the bus on Colfax, but a little too yuppie for my tastes.

I'd avoid Colfax, unless you like seedy neighborhoods. My problem is that a lot of the alternatives are way upscale for my budget. My impression is that it's a choice between seedy and upscale, with not much in between.

Colfax is a freaking long street. I'm assuming you mean East Colfax, which has it's neo-hip pockets now.

Obviously avoid five points, commerce city, aurora, etc. Look into the Congress Park and Capitol Hill areas. They are good locations and have nice, inexpensive places to rent.

And as the train at DIA says....Welcome to Denver!

I wouldn't live in five points but that area is where some of the best live music is at. Commerce city is still a dump but they are trying to improve with the new soccer stadium and all that new stuff out there. Most of Aurora is still crap too. Some of the stuff out near smoky hill isn't too bad if the identical houses and sub developments that you can't find your way out of because the streets are all curvy are your thing.

five points is gentrifying, and some nights it's pretty tense. I've seen two for sure shootings and heard a couple more. But if you are not the flamboyant sort, it could be good...if you can afford it.
