Doing this poll 'cos I don't label myself a hippy, I just have some attitudes that make me a bit 'hippyish'. I sometimes get called 'hippy' by kids when I drive past them too.

Wondered what other people think of this label

    Indie kid all the way...

I have liberal politics but I don't associate this with any kind of fashion label like hippyness - it can only be a fashion label, can't it? I associate my liberal politics with having a brain, not wearing tie-dye. Conservative politics is just an indication that the person hasn't thought things through to their conclusion. Hippies can dress funky and be brainless Tory voters.

    i have long hair
    im a student
    i have no job
    tie dye socks
    a greatful dead album
    and have a larva lamp...

but no im certainly not a hippy....

hippy is about good enough as a term now for describing whiney finding themselves inner city kids who want to rebel from their middle class parents attitudes and beliefs, and against their friends who went down the goth route....the ones that think that making thier own cloths, burning insence, and going on their "travelling" weeks, which are just a small camping holiday to the country side. the ones that shop in all those "alt" shops, and use words like groovy, because they saw neil from the young ones use it, or because its on austin powers...the ones that fancy themselves as being a bit different, the ones that go to protests and things because being left wing fits in with their newly found fashion beliefs, when all along they claim that "fashion doesnt matter man, i mean, come on, i dont care what i wear" the ones that have no idea why or what they think, the simple fact is that they are finding themselves, and hippy is just something which attempts to set them appart from all the other types of people in society. an attempt to break free from catagories and judgement, which is hypocrytical because being a hippy is all about those things....

hippy is now a word for the cliche aspects of what was once a valid counter culter movement.

You know I really dont get this:confused:

Is there some kinda youth split between goths and hippies?

We never had that 10 years ago

Hippies / Goths / Punks / Skaters / Grunge / Riot Grrls etc all hung out together... protested together

    we just kinda got on

i don't get the divide that seems to be around now

nor me claire, im sick of this whole "your a goth, im a hippy" or "your a townie im a goth" thing thats going around.

when i was in school it was just get on with everyone regaurdless....

its just got to the point now, where kids try to define themselves to the point that they alienate themselves from anyone else thats different, its not on the basis of colour, sex, or race anymore, its on the basis of fashion, music, and other things like that, its pathetic

    catagories?

hell why do people feel the need to define themselves by fitting into a catagory?

wear what you want to wear
listen to what you want to listen
and do what you wanna do
who gives a shit if your a hippy or a goth or a giant monkey!

    who really gives a shit!?

i mean come on, is defining your self as a hippy rather than a neo psychedelic third time removed static mushroom muncher going to make any major difference to the wellbeing and happiness of your life? i think not

its all interesting words that uninteresting people adopt to make their lives seem more interesting

Yeh... if I had to define myself it would be by the way i live my life... not by the music I listen to or clothes I wear

I went to a festival today... there were rap artists, reggae artists, punk rockers and many bands i couldnt and wouldnt want to define.

They all had the same message.... Peace NOT war.

Regardless of what clothes they were wearing / music style they were playing, they all had the same message...

no serious person, who is completely happy in themselves sits around and frets about the catagory they fit into....

however, if we are to have catagories, im picking my own, and im gonna be a generation one mofo monkey lover!

I thought of myself as a hippy for a bit when I first got into politics. When I first started wondering, "Jesus, is the Labour party the best we have?". Looking into the more left wing parties brought the 60's hippy or rather the 60's activist to my attention.

And it was quite the eye opener really, I didn't know about what Ghandi had been up to with the non-violent protest against the awful rulers. So yeah, at that time, I thought these hippy folk were really on to something.

It didn't last long though, me thinking I was a hippy. It basically came down to knowledge, that hippy generation as I say opened my eyes, but by doing that it just confirmed what I'd been thinking that no one truly fits into any catagory perfectly.

As for the fashion side of it, I don't get how people can get so upset about someone dressing ala hippy. I think chances are (excluding the fairly recent surge of the hippy fashion if I can!) that someone who looks like your stereotypical hippy probably has a fairly well rounded view of the world.

You know, wearing comfortable clothes, second hand clothes, clothes that serve their purpose and are made in ethical environments. Clothes which are dirty. I don't get the problem there, if clothes truly don't matter, why is it pissing you off?

Hmm :) - In the words of Larry Flynt, "Okay that's all I gotta go.".

Wow spyder, you've got one helluva chip on your shoulder!

I guess I still think of myself as a hippy, but then the word hippy means different things to different people, and even then it's usually impossible for each individual to define.

Maybe 'head' is a better word. Used to be used for pot smokers, but kinda expanded to included a much broader grouping of anti-establishment types.

Tell me what a hippy is, and I'll tell you if I am one!

    Some people don't :)
    It might make life easier
    It might make life harder
    But some people don't.

It doesn't really matter anyway, if some people do feel the need to define themselves by fitting into a category, then that's just their decision. Be it a good one or a bad one. Decisions change anyway.

I think this is part of our tribal nature. It's deeply rooted within us, the desire to fit into a group. In some ways it's negative (the willingness to sublimate our individuality into a group identity) and in some ways it's positive (a healthy desire to connect with like-minded people). At the end of the day, it comes down to what it means for each individual. For example, when I think of myself as a hippy, I don't think of it as something that defines me. Nor do I make any attempt to behave in a way that conforms to this definition. It's simply a convenient shorthand for the kind of person that I am.

Back in the convoy days (http://tash.gn.apc.org/INDEX.htm ) it used to amuse me how the press used to demonize us for being violent and dangerous but refered to us as 'hippies'. Never got my head round that one.

Today I'm an activist, try my best to be an anarchist, yet everyone still calls me a hippy, I wouldnt mind but it's often ment as a derogatory label!:p
