... The below song is many years old, but I fear what with Covid 19, and the turmoil in America and Great Britain and far too many terrible things going on all around the world all around the world, we really are on.... The Eve Of Destruction! What say YOU? If you have never heard this song before, then I urge that you have a listen. Eve Of Destruction Barry McGuire The Eastern world, it is explodin' Violence flarin', bullets loadin' You're old enough to kill but not for votin' You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'? And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin' But you tell me over and over and over again my friend Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction Don't you understand what I'm trying to say? Can't you feel the fear that I'm feeling today? If the button is pushed, there's no running away There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you, boy But you tell me over and over and over again, my friend Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin' I'm sittin' here just contemplatin' I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation Handful of Senators don't pass legislation And marches alone can't bring integration When human respect is disintegratin' This whole crazy world is just too frustratin' And you tell me over and over and over again my friend Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction Think of all the hate there is in Red China Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama Ah, you may leave here for four days in space But when you return, it's the same old place The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace And you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
A classic, was very popular among the GI's in Vietnam, and symbolises a lot of what is wrong in the world today, certainly here in the UK, it's like the line, 'you're old enough to kill but not for voting' , it constantly annoys me that UK law allows a lad of 14, 15, 16 to remain annonymous after being convicted of murder, if you're old enough to commit the crime then you're old enough to be named, people have a right to know, it's like the ban on identifying children who kill. That arsehole Venables, the lad who killed little Jamie Bulger, he actually went out with my mates younger sister, he was working in a pizza hut near us and started going out with her, he used to go to my mates and play with his young kids, then one day he disappeared, she knew nothing for about 3 or 4 days. One of her mates found out who he was after it came out that the reason he'd gone missing was he'd been locked up for kiddie porn, sick barsteward. My mate has a photo of him somewhere, can you imagine how you'd feel knowing that murdering sod had visited your house and played with your kids,it's wrong.
I agree with all you say there Phil. God mate. You and I should have a great conversation in the pub while sorting out the bastard world over a few beers!
Well, I suppose I can mention it now, since it was years ago when the incident occurred, I don't know if you are aware but at one time he was incarcerated in Red Bank, about a mile from me, another famous resident years earlier was Mary Bell, the Scottish girl who was also a child killer. Anyway during his time there he was beaten up and required treatment for a severely fractured arm, apparently they missed his neck! Initial treatment was carried out at the local major hospital as iirc he required surgery, However it was deemed too disruptive to carry out his physiotherapy there because of who he was. One day I was taking my wife back to work at our local cottage hospital and it was eerily quiet, before lunch it had been busy. It transpired that all physio appointments had been cancelled due to the attendance of a VIP patient, we'd seen this once before with a famous footballer(who shall remain nameless), this time the VIP arrived in a car escorted by a number of plain clothed police officers, and guess who it was, yes, Venables! They cancelled a whole afternoons appointments, just so that little shit could have physio, I feel a particular ire for him, partly due to the way he's been treated, several times he has had his identity changed, not because it was discovered, but because he TOLD people who he was in an attempt to gain some sort of fame! The other reason is I was privy to certain details about what he did to his victim that were not common knowledge, it didn't make pleasant reading! Personally I think he should have been let loose in the middle of Liverpool, in a highly publicised event of course, on a Saturday afternoon, The good people of Liverpool have long been known for their love of sport, and i'm sure they'd have given him a sporting chance to get away, not.
I never knew that! I do remember Barry Maquire singing this on Ed Sullivan or some thing like that. The Turtles were cool beans. I loved Happy Together and was quite pleased when Frank Zappa covered it.
I have an old period boxed set of 8 Turtles 45's. Transparent clear vinyl. Took me awhile to come up with the cash to buy it back then. Never played. I've seen them twice. The first time I talked to Flo and Eddy but I forgot to bring the set to get signed, but I did get them to sign a photograph. It's hanging on my wall Oh...and I saw them with Zappa at good old Cal. State back when they were recording 200 Motels. As I recall there was some equipment mix up so they came out and did a "Famous Zanarini" routine on stage by jumping around and falling down before the show started.. In those days things were pretty informal. We sat on the floor, the stage was elevated about 12" off the floor so we were leaning on the stage about two feet from Zappa's feet. Most of the crowd didn't like the show as they didn't know who Zappa was and he kept making fun of "our" one red light town. (We didn't really need the red light.)
humans, for some inexplicable reason, seem to love drama. the loading human population levels are placing on the capacities and rates of renewal of the natural environment may be a contributing factor. certainly they are a degrading factor to it, and the existence of the species, like any species, depends on the stability of the biosphere which is dependent on species diversity. the universe works in ways that are more often impartial then dramatic though. the end of the world takes time, decades or more. this plague in particular may be something of a shot accross our bows. at any rate, its the environment and what we're doing to it, and that because of our priorities that seriously need an honest, in depth, logical and detatched reexamination. it is however choice, or more accurately, the statistical sum of our individual choices. use of combustion where other and better technologies are available, times total human population of the planet, is the major combination of contributing factors. belief has too often been used as an excuse for ignoring them. again this is choice, and belief was never intended for us to tell each other to ignore the reaping of what we sew.
Thanks for an interesting post. It is about time the world learned that lesson about reaping what we sew before it is too late. But then. Perhaps it already is?!
well there are tipping points we have passed and others we have not. meaning there are some things nothing we do now will avoid entirely, but there are also things that what we do now determines how many will survive. main things to improve the odds are what i've already mentioned. basically lower the birthrate and use cleaner sources of energy. god or gods might like to hear from us, but they're not going to wipe our mess if we keep making it.
