graphics, sound, and gameplay complexity improve? Its no question that video games have taken a huge step in the last two decades. The graphics and sound are incredible compared to the first predecessor. Although, just because the graphics and sound is top notch, does that mean the game complexity has improved? Worse Better No Opinion What do you think?
They have been getting worse for a long, long time now. They have all the same problems as Hollywood, lacking in any creativity. The genres selection is getting smaller and smaller, and whole genres have seemingly disappeared. I mean, Zone of the Enders is coming back out, but when's the last time a decent mech game came out? They all rip each other off, and most seem to be made for idiots or babies to play. And with all the emphasis on realism; few developers seem to remember that it's supposed to be fun. I completely disagree with you about gameplay complexity improving. Funny picture on topic:
I prefer older video games on the whole. One thing which annoys me now is that most games focus too much on online gameplay, leaving a crap campaign story line. I do have a PS3, and I do love games like Fallout 3, but I still prefer side scrollers or just PS1 games, like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro. Most companies just think sticking in loads of graphics makes a good game. I agree with this, I hate things that try to be too realistic, just like 3D cartoons
GAH! To be honest, I'm glad FPS aren't just 'rats in a maze' design anymore. I agree that often times there are waaaay too many cutscenes, but I'd never want to go back to getting lost in Wolfenstein 3D esque levels. That shit annoyed me to no end.
old games are amazing. some of the music and creativity in old video games amaze me. mainly snes/n64/ps1/dreamcast. those 4 systems had some amazing games. plus a lot of those games took focus and skill.
in the future when I have kids I am gonna only buy snes and n64. I want them to grow up on the same video games I did. I think all that future crap is garbage for the mind and that old video games are healthy for the mind. the only good games future wise I think are first person shooter games for the computer. like counter strike source. people can experience futuristic military tactical operations without actually dying in real life haha. if you actually take the time to get a team of people on the microphones that can cooperate with each other and be sneaky and stuff then its fun.
I think I am going to download ARMA 2 demo on steam. have never played it before. I played lots of shooters. though rainbow six(can be very stealthy sneaky at times) battle field 2/special operations battle field 1942 day of defeat source counter strike source call of duty halo and some others a few on playstation online also like socom series.
When it comes to complexity.. i think older games take the cake.. part of it may be that back in the 80s( yeah before most of you were a cum stain in your momma's panties) and into the 90's you couldn't just jump online and find out how to beat something.. it actually took time and wits ti figure it out.. now its all a cake walk.. as if they had to make games easier so that people would play them... As for FPS.. they are all cookie cutter games.. same basic point just a different story line.. Black Ops was nothing more than a glorified interactive movie
Totally, that game blew my mind when I first popped it in, it seemed overwhelming with all the stuff to do. I still play it from time to time. Counterstrike Source? C'mon man! I love the game but it is essentially at it's core a 12 year old game, I don't think you can consider it a truely 'modern' shooter. As for whether or not I think games are getting worse: I'm not entirely sure, lol. I would say the amount of quality games to come out is lacking compared to the Super Nintendo/Genesis era as well as the PS1/N64 and PS2/Xbox/Gamecube eras. It is likely to do with the sheer amount of $$ that goes into new games, but also the fact there is 50x more people making the games then there used to be. You'd have to think that some of the character and charm gets lost in translation when so many people are involved with making the games. I don't think it's like that with all developers, I think some put more effort and quality into their games, an example being Rockstar, they made Red Dead Redemption, one of my favorite games and it screams quality and love. While companies like Square Enix have gone from greatness to routinely pumping out games that aren't up to par with what they used to make. I don't think games will ever be the same. For every gem like Red Dead and Mass Effect, there are a 100 games that suck. I think it's an omen of the future; there will be too many trash games and too few great games.
I downloaded some old ones to my wii. Some of them are frustratingly difficult. I'm not used to it like I used to be. Damn. With that fact alone it's obvious to me anyway that they've dumbed them down a bit.
I think a lot of the fault lies with the players/buyers. The less profitable a shitty game is - the more quality of games will come out.
I couldn't agree more, if people didn't buy the garbage they would be forced to make good games or else they would lose money. Instead, they shuffle out game after game that isn't up to the standards it once was. The truly troubling part: it doesn't look like things will ever change.
The best bet we would have is for the economy to completely fall through so people can only afford to buy a really good game every now and then =P
