If everyone obeyed the letter of the law, would we achieve utopia, or would cops suddenly be arresting people for the most minor infractions, such as spitting on the sidewalk or driving one mile per hour over the limit?
If we did not have Jerry Rubin where would we be? And how about George Carlin??? Life would be so tame, so boring that it would become meaningless. I think mankind is programmed in their brains to be a bit contrarian, as it actually sparks creativity and innovation. Without these there would be no progression of the species overall. But there are those who contrarily believe that we should all go back to a pre-industrial society just for shits and giggles.
people make up rules for many reasons. some of them have nothing to do with morality. there is only one evil, though it has many names. one of those many names is aggressive inconsiderateness. that is the one true evil. among its other names are narcissism, bigotry, belligerence, and there are others, but they're really all the one thing, and that one thing is aggressive inconsiderateness, the causing of needless, unprovoked, harm that benefits nothing in any way, however much its perpetrators try to pretend that it does, however much they may believe, or try to pretend they believe, they're doing the world any favors by doing so. fascism, greed, they're all names, ultimately hyper aggressiveness is what they're all forms of. breaking rules just to be breaking them isn't freedom, its why we don't have the freedoms that we don't. to protect ourselves and each other from the inconsiderateness of those who refuse or are unable to restrain themselves is why we need rules, even if many of the rules we end up with, arn't the rules we most need. point being, the only reason we do need them, is precisely because of people refusing to be considerate, or assuming things to be harmless, that are often times extremely NOT harmless after all. robbing someone of being able to think their own thoughts, for example, is damd sure not victimless at all. its no more innocent then robbing their car or their house. it should be treated as a serious fellony and not a mere misdomeanor. yes a lot of rules exist motivated by the wrong priorities, priorities that are neither moral nor logical. but to break every rule just to be breaking it. that only demonstrates one's own lack of moral character, and no one needs to be shaming themselves by doing so. evil isn't about belief or ideology, its about what kind of world we create, by how we act, for everyone else, and ultimately ourselves as well, have to experience living in. and there is really no other evil, in this world or any world then that, the choice, by inconsiderateness, to cause harm. by contrast, if people were considerate enough of each other and of all things, we would not need hierarchies in any form, we would still need social organization to have any kind of infrastructure, but it would have no need to be hierarchical in nature, likewise to insure universal availability of food and shelter.
Case in point: Singapore. I use to go there often as a semiconductor engineer for Bell Labs, and they call it "The Fine City," because it is very clean but also because there are five hundred way to be fined there. The first time I was there I walked out of a subway with a styrofoam cup of coke and everyone was looking at me funny until someone stopped me to say I better throw that away before an officer sees me walking the street carrying around potential litter. Are clean streets worth living in a totalitarian state that watches and regulates every aspect of your life? I mean talk about Big Brother.
