Its a little nasty but you can always was your hands after your done. So any tips for a beginner on where to go to get good finds. So far ive just been driving around the apartment complex close to me and raiding their dumpster. Another question is would you get kicked out of home depot or lowes if you went raiding their dumpster. Same with kroger or meijer? O and also whats the coolest find you've dumpster diving. Myself ive found about 160 dollars in cans since i moved into this apartment, a RCA TV and a dvd player.
i take things off the curb sometimes. i don't dive into dumpsters, that just sounds dangerous. found a table one time. go out to suburban areas on trash day, you wouldnt believe some of the stuff some people throw out
I've been all about dumpster diving for as long as I can remember. I can't think of the coolest thing I have ever found. got some good records a couple of times, got a left handed hockey stick, furniture, some good books, subwoofers, and some other cool stuff.
the big chains all have locked dumpsters....i looked into the scrap parts bin at a Canadian Tire store in the summer and i found one of those fancy 300 dollar folding ladders with the tags still on it..it had a dent
Salvation Army.. Goodwill and other consignment store dumpsters.... also college residential areas.. especially after the week of finals..if you dont know when your local colleges finish classes.. find out! it's surprising the shit college kids throw away because its nothing to them. only "temporary college crap".. but you can find almost brand new living room sets.. tvs... stereos.. anything they didn't or couldn't pack into their car
Dumpster diving is the shit. But i had a friend once who got a needle stuck is his ass from some junkie who left it there. So i never actually dive in to the shit, just sit on the edge or something Peace
I've never actually gone dumpster diving but when I was a kid there was a place known by all the kids in the area as "the chip factory". It wasn't actually a factory...just some sort of holding/distribution warehouse where chips were kept before going to stores. They would throw all the expired chips in this dumpster behind the place and we'd go and take them. It wasn't used for anything but expired chips so there was nothing to worry about there, and since expired chips are still edible for up to a few months longer than the best before date (just not legal to sell) they were good enough for us as kids. edit: I remember one time I went there to get chips and this fucking homeless guy was popping the bags with a stick..I'm not sure if he was trying to pull a bag out, but was too drunk to climb in and get it or if he was just being an asshole but there was only 1-2 good bags left after he had popped the other 20 or so.
Im really looking for anything, stuff to sell and scrap metal, furniture. Didnt really think about going to colleges. Should find out when the spring quarter for OSU is and go load up my car.
If you see electronics, take them, once you get a bunch you can recycle them. For some stuff (cut off cords, etc) you can get paid directly with little hassle, but others you might have to give up free. But it's a hell of a lot better than having stuff like copper gold and batteries in the landfill, where they'll never be used again. Watch out for broken glass. Especially if you're a barefooter. I walk fully accross the street to avoid dumpsters when barefoot, they're always in a puddle of tiny glass shards of the most dangerous damaging type. And once you're in a dumpster, tiny shards can be stuck in cardboard or cloth, and if there's anything like tape or something on the edges of the dumpster, it may have glass in it, or it can even be balanced there. So yeah, don't get hurt, there's sharp shit everywhere. Other than that, move out days at dorms and college apartments are like HOLY FUCK. Some stores are good. If you're a complete badass you could consider a lockpick gun for the locked ones, but watch out, that totally changes the legality of being upside down in their dumpster. Don't get caught by a chain, they'll start being more careful and maliciously throwing out good shit in such a way that you'll never get it.... Evening is usually a good time, before it's so dark you need a light but after the normal bustle is gone. If you're at a store, between when people get off at 5-6 and when the next shift throws stuff out, I guess, or just watch them and see how that store does. And if you do meet someone, don't be hostile, try to make friends, maybe they'll help you out, instead of call the cops. Believe it or not, it's legal to throw out good shit, but illegal to take it out of someone's "private" dumpster, or at least illegal if they decide to throw a fit.
find out when people are moving out of the dorms.. people throw out all sortsa stuff; mini fridges, tvs, microwaves, unopened food, clothes.. you name it
