Anytime you do something that causes pain your body is sending you a message. It could be a message that you are pushing yourself beyond your present capacities like when you try to learn something really hard and it is difficult or when you push yourself to run further than you ever have before. These types of things may be good as in stretching yourself so you have the ability to use your mind or body more fully. Then there is the kind of pain message where your body is telling you that you are doing damage to it like when you break you leg or get hit in the head. This kind of thing is not good for you and that's why your body is sending you a negative message to not do whatever it was that caused that kind of pain. I believe smoking too much and having pain in your lungs falls into the second category. When I was younger I smoked so much dope that I started having lung problems and I ignored it and it got so bad I finally got very sick with bronchitis and asthma which has never really gone away to this day over 30 years later. So I would say listen to your body and at least take a break to where you are not getting these symptoms any more. Otherwise you could fuck yourself up severely or even permanently.

Do cardiovascular exercise once in a while.

perhaps you should smoke less - get more exercise - make sure you are hydrated when you toke - or your best bet for lung safety is to get a vaporizer.

Try using filters - not cardboard roaches, proper filters - in your joints, and don't smoke bongs. Might consider spinning it slightly with menthol tobacco, I've got an older friend who swears by it. Definitely makes for a smoother smoke.

Another thing you can try is put the joint between your fingers and use your hand as a chamber to give the smoke a little time to cool down before you inhale.

Its probably just the pain of your lungs expanding.

    I've had those pains too.

Pain is just a feeling, it will pass.

You dont have to let it overwhelm you.

what are you using in the bong?

cold water? Ice water? Warm water?

    Warm warm is the smoothest

    +1

Though if you've had a bad cold lately or just getting over one - that could leave some nastiness in your lungs/air pipes!

there is a natural tendency for your lungs to constrict when you breathe in cold air

so give warm water<body temp> not hot water a try

you should give your body a chance to heal itself (and lower tolerance in the process)
use the time you do not smoke to save up for a vaporizer, and go with a good one. we just got one but havent broken it in yet. vapor brothers or something.
