Well, I'm wondering if anyone here started their dreads by the backcombing method and has never used wax, or has used only VERY little. How did you maintain them? Please be as specific as you possibly can.

    I did. =)

    Never used a single bit.

Maintainance included: Washed 1 or 2 times a week, (not as much anymore however, don't need it). Palmrolled, but not a lot. Wore a beanie to bed the first 2-3 weeks I believe...
Other than that I mostly just let em do their thing, they seem to be fine on their own.
But of course it all comes down preference.

no wax on my head! i backcombed, and left them alone. the first week, i waited 5 days to wash, but then my hair was getting a little nasty, so i showered. now i shower every few days, or whenever they feel not so fresh. i use doc bronner's liquid, just cause that's what i could find out here. it works fine and smells pretty. i don't palmroll, i just rip them apart at the roots a bit and just mess with them in general cause i always fiddle with things.

Back combed left them for a bit. Wrapped them all in wool for a bit 'cause I wanted to look like a cenobite - really tightened things up too. I wash with baking soda and salt every 4 days. I do a bit of fiddling/ripping at the roots as well, since i wear them covered at work so much, I've developed a black hole dread area were a hole half of my head is trying to become one at the roots. I also occasionally palm roll with aloe.

backcombed to establish the tangles in an accelerated way, but left a lot of sections un backcombed and only after 2 weeks they have already started gnarling themselves up. all it takes is the mentality that you want dreads, and it will occur. i have not used any product (other than doc. bronner peppermint) and already have some very tightened dreads, but at the same time there are sections of my hair that are free flowing and untangled still. its just a patience thing that requires dedication and tolerace

I backcombed and then let them be. I palmroll a bit but not a whole lot.
