Are there any other rat owners here????? I have had rats since 2001 and am addicted! They are such good pets! I currently have 5 of them... ~Saukrates - beige/white hooded standard ~Claribel - black/white hooded standard ~Keeping's Sprite - black/white bareback standard ~Keeping's Zephyr - black berkshire dumbo ~Keeping's Jellyroll - siamese dumbo I used to always buy rats from the pet store...and usually they came with health problems...then I found a local fancy rat breeder named Kjaerstin (Keeping Pets)...from now on I am only going to her...screw the bad pet stores! Two of my rats,Saukrates and Claribel are from a pet store an doing well, but they are my last "pet store rats"...
I have got 2 gorgeous fuzzle butts They are hooded champagne albinos and they are called Aisha & Tigerlilly
Awww...cute! Thats another word I could use to call mine...I already call them fuzz-butts...They also have cute names!
i'd love to adopt a rat but with two dogs in the house......one being a rat terrier.....its probably not a wise idea.
Awww...thats too bad.If you maybe had a spare room that you could have the rats in and not let the dogs in...my pets are kept in a room I call the "animal room", because I used to foster dogs and take dogs in off the street temporarily and you never know how they would react! However many rat owners have dogs too, and they just watch the rats closley if the dogs are around. My family has a terrier mix, but he likes my rats. When I bring my rats down for a visit, he gets excited, but has never hurt any of them...we watch him anyway... just in case...afterall he does have terrier in him... Here is a photo of Coco and one of my rats ~ Saukrates~
Rats are the Best! My girls gave me two last year, John Big Bootay (now in the astral realm) and Buckaroo Bonzai. I am totally amazed by how affectionate and mellow they are. Buckaroo has become like a baby, more like a gentle kitten, nuzzeling, laying still with me for hours when i read at night, wants to be near me and sitting with me and on my lap laying still and serene. And then he yawns, and cleans himself with his little hands, so incredibly sweet, They are just fanatstic pets! They are just intuitive and profound, i don't know how to describe it, it's an eneffable knowingness they possess. silver rat, your *siamese* baby is precious!
yes we have always had rats they are wonderful pets and companions we have 2 brown ones now star and misty we also have dogs cat goats etc etc the trick is with rats to keep them entertained they are so inquisitive
Thanks... They are such wonderful pets and nobody can say anything against it unless they have experianced having rats...they are wonderful! Rats are less likely to bite then a hamster (my sister has a really bitey hammie), they do not have the nasty mouse odor (I have 16 now and have bred them from 1998-2002...and no matter how clean you keep the cage, they always have that odor) and they are not as destructive as gerbils (my gerbil has "destroy" on her mind!!!)...rats are definatly the best "pocket pet"...
Definatly! A bored rat is an unhappy rat! I try and keep mine busy everyday by taking them out of their cage...sometimes letting them free-range in the bedroom...other times in another room! They need stimulation! They aslo love climbing and wrestling and having fun!!!
our twp are so funny when they are cleaning each other one lies very still while the other cleans they are twins by the way
I have owned a couple ratties in the past.. Two male berkshire boys named pippin and merry.. They were just dolls.. both had to be put down due to health problems.. Right now I have one blue dumbo male named Nimbus.. hes a terror..
For some reason I'm always afriad a Rat or something of the rodent faimly will bite me....Is a rat better then a gunnei pig?
In my opinion yes.. Rats are the smartest animals under dogs, some are even smarter. They are so friendly, and sweet.. they bond very good with kids and people. even other animals. They are very cheap to buy, but expensive to maintain. Guinea pigs are very skiddish and loud, they dont like to be held much and have a very specific diet.
When I worked for PetsMart I worked in animal care and we had a special room for "speical" animals that got into fights and the such..... All the animals you had to be very careful with or they'd escape...you could leave the door open and set one of the two pigs on the floor and they'd just sit there...you could like poke um or something and they wouldn't move...We had one called Cock Head...well cause his head was crooked when we got him....These were of course the animals we couldn't sell for obvious reasons but we also wouldn't put them down... The workers however could "adopt them" it was pretty cool.
I worked at petcetera for 2 years. I know that guineas can be tamed and handled.. but they just dont like to be.. some get used to people, and complain if they arnt cuddled. .
Yeah, Cock Head didn't like being picked up. They make alot of noise and like to knock over there food pan! I swear I'd give it nice clean water and food and what does it do as soon as i put it in the cage? Knock them both over -_-
Silver Rat, the wonderful photo of Saukrates reminds me so much of our beautiful boys, long gone now. We kept rats for many years and we miss them sooooo much. Poppy was our first, she lived in a chest of drawers in my daughters bedroom and was spoiled rotten by us all. She loved to take a nap in bed and go for walks snuggled in a coat pocket, peeping out now and again, curious but nervous too. My daughter wrote music for her. Opium Fields for Poppy at her dreamiest, and Skip the Hop when she would dance and skip across the floor. Many other little darlings followed Poppy, and all gave great joy, and a whole lot of worry when they were ill. We've kept many pets, all loved, but the little rats have a special place in our memories.
