I like Blind Melon... reminds me of my childhood. I "borrowed" my dad's old Blind Melon cd and listen to it sometimes when I study.

I had pretty much written Blind Melon off when I first heard of them. My first experience with them like much ot the country was when No Rain came out and MTV pounded it into our subconscience on an hourly basis. It wasnt untill a buddy of mine played Soup for me that I realized how good they were. Of course I went out and bought Blind Melon, Soup, and then Nico.

I really love the music and even before Shanon died I felt that they had the dark side or melancholy feel about them. I just posted yesterday on another thread how much I love them but the music pulls me down.

If you had to chose one favorite song, what would it be?

 

I got Shannon Hoon and the rest of the boys stoned when they were recording the Bee Girl album here at Londin Bridge studios. I was in the band Stickerbush (see me gallery) at the time, and my pal Larry Steiner (Of the band El Steiner) told me about an open house at London Bridge. So we booked down there and there was this band staying in two vans parked in the parking lot, where the studios were holding a barbecue.

I forget exactly what year it was, eary 90's some time. There was this cat with grateful Dead t-shirt on, and I started talking to him. He said he was in the band Blind Melon,and they were about to go on tour and promote the almbum they were recording there.

I said, "Hey man, you guys wanna get baked?"...of course he said yes. So Larry, myself and the band all climbed into a Ford Econoline van and we sparked up tuff. Shannon was wearing the same turqoise jewelry he had on on the cover of Rolling stone, that's about all he had on, he he.

I was mildly shocked when the album came out, and I saw the boys on MTV (empty-V), and they swiftly became my favorite band, just about of all time.

I loved the first album, the words, Shannon's voice, the songs. Psychedelic Love Rock, it was ther same spirit that local boys MotherLoveBone had. The same thing happened to them too, as Andy Wood, a REAL good friend of mine, OD'd after they signed the bniggest contract that any Northwest band had ever signed, with Geffen records.

Then Andy, known as Landrew the Love Child when he was in Malfunkshun, OD'd on heroin right before their debut album "Apple" came out. Man, the fuckin' rocked soooo good. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament went on to team up with Mike Mcready (Larry's room mate) to form Pearl Jam, and they out an add out for a singer and Eddy Vedder, who was from San Diego joined, and they changed style and the rest is history.

I will always remember Shannon Hoon and the boys, they wee real humble and sweet guys at that time. I didn't care much foer Soup or Nico, the next records. I felt that fame didn't do their music well, but the first record is among the 10 albums I would bring on a desert island. (I see that the previous poster liked those albums better, but that's what personal taste and diversity is all about). Maybe I didn't give those records anough of a chance, I can be a music snob sometimes.

i must say...wow...about blind melon!

Im listening to the album off of http://cdzlimited.org/rock/A_B/blindmelon.html, and im suprised how good it is! Listening to No Rain, i was expecting something different...but they can jam out rather good!

Only listened to the first song off their first album, so maybe i shouldnt make assumptions to quickly...but so far i really like em, might buy the cd!

 

Getting stoned in a van is alway fun. Getting stoned in a van with Blind Melon, I would have to say, would be exceptional.

 

Sleepyhouse and Holyman almost make me cry. I love those songs soooo much. Thanks for the link! That rocks mega.

BTW: They got their name from Blind Melon Chitlin, a selection off of Cheech and Chong's first record.

 

I think that my favorite song from the first album would have to be Time...."I drink from the faucet, from the porch I take a pee..look at you through the bushed where you cant see me".

I really like the first one but, for me, it just doesnt have the soul of Soup. The first album is a little too crisp and clean. It lacks the dirty cellar that Soup has.

Change is also a great tune from the first.

 

Blind Melon is beautiful. Holyman almost makes me cry, along with Tones of Home.

 

Fairly recent convert myself. I remember hearing "No Rain" on the radio before, but I didn't really "get it" until I listened to the whole album. Wonderful stuff.

 

Blind Melon has been one of my favorite bands since about 1993 when I first heard them and I went out and bought the album. I still listen to them all the time 11 years later. I havent been to his vigil yet, but Im looking foward to it soon.

 

Blind Melon's music is the music I want to listen to when I'm feeling most happy with the world. Lovely - though some of it is tinged with a dark sadness, they make me feel ultimately optimistic.
Nearly saw them at Glastonbury when I was 15, but it went wrong and I ended up sleeping a little too much and missed them - thanks to the enthusiasm of 'experimentation' in adolescence!

Arguably for me the best period in music (certainly in my opinion). Though shame it all went sour and too many of the genius artists working at the time died before elevating themselves to the heights they would've achieved...
Sleepyhouse and Change are beautiful. As are some of the finer moments on Soup and Nico like Mouthful of Cavities and Soul One respectively.

I love Blind Melon... only song I've heard that is somewhat bad is "3 is the Magic Number"... imo they're the greatest band of the last 15 years, probably even longer than that. Its a shame he had to die so young... I cant really listen to their music alone anymore cuz I get tears in my eyes when I hear his voice

"change" makes me get up and dance every time!!

 

one of my favourite albums of all time would have to be soup. from the song skinned to the verses of mouth full of cavities. i am a huge fan. shannon hoon, and the rest of blind melon where truly an awesome band musically, as well as lyrically...... and the visuals that the combined brought together are truley amazing.
its good to know theres others that share the love, and torment of mr. hoon
