Any pet owner knows they communicate to us what they want, and we obey them. We know animals can read our minds, although we offiically pretend they can't. Even hunters learn not to think about shooting an animal so they won't spook their prey. I could tell stories all day proving my point, but usually I keep quiet, since it's not politically correct to say so. Only one quick story: I used to burn down the dangerous Bald Hornet nests near my horse pasture until I observed one snatching a housefly off my horse. Yet, if I tried to remove a horse while it was being patrolled by a hornet, I got stung. It was nice not having flies, so I simply waited until evening to go riding. Soon they built a huge nest right by the main pasture gate. By then the hornets had decided we "belonged" so let us pass within a few feet of the nest. But one day my new Blue Heeler pup decided to take bites out of the nest. The hornets chased her down and stung her so badly she had to jump in the creek. After that she was banned from the nest area and had to circle far out around the gate to go with us to the barn, yet the other four dogs were allowed to trot past. When my sister visited, they recognized her and her kids as my relatives by their scent, but her husband got one warning sting and had to circle around. When I wanted to walk within inches of the hornet's nest to pick apples, two hornet guards went with me, one hovering above each shoulder to make sure I wasn't up to any mischief. I ignored them (hovering by my ears) and soon they were satisfied I was harmless and left. Next time I went to the tree, they started to follow me, then turned back. After that, I was allowed to almost brush against the nest, but left alone. If any visitor questioned me I just said I like having a free horse pasture guard/fly remover, and I enjoyed an insect-free summer.
