Looking after the needs and well being of animals is very important, and always will be. But we have to draw the line at giving them legal rights yet. Humans don't have full and equal rights yet.

Animals have the right to be free of pain, always. And they are entitled to happiness and a quality life too. But, unlike humans, they have to be put to sleep if there are too many of them. But fortunately, unlike humans, they don't have the right to make that decision or the right know about it. Etc. We should work for the gradual abolition of meat.

Meat is unhealthy too. Tell your carnivore friends. And meat production is less humane, even more cruel, than they think. Show them the evidence. And for now, let's try to make meat production as humane as possible, as a more realistic goal. For now, at least.
