I was shocked when I first heard the story of Andrew Burnett. In 2000 he killed a woman's dog during a road rage incident by throwing it into oncoming traffic. But that wasn't the only shocking thing. He got the maxmum penalty. Which in California at the time was just 3 years in prison. I just looked it up, and in Michigan the penalty for extreme animal cruelty, first-degree torture it says, is 10 years in prison. In 2000 it was just up to 4 years in prison, which is what I recall. But in Calfornia, I just read, nothing has changed. Speaking mainly to other moderates on this subject, but inviting others to join in of course, what would be fair for this crime? I know some animal rights activists say it should be in the 20-year range, like for other serious felonies. They also point out that animal abusers often go onto abuse humans like that. I was actually thinking since 2000 that having it in the 10-year range would make some more sense. Or maybe a little more than that, maybe 15 years. Any thoughts?
10 years and they can start with Christi Noam who hadn't the patience to find her dog a new home and blasted it into oblivion!!
Katie Hobbs, Governor of Arizona, yesterday signed a bill into law that puts LARGE penalties on persons convicted of abusing animals. Bravo !!
The vast majority of animal abuse, is committed by the rich and famous, and the poor. Raising financial penalties will deter the poor, and embarrassing the wealthy in public deters them.
Also just to be clear and to repeat, for the past 30 years my position on veganism has been the same. I agree with you in principle, I just don't think your political position is very practical. And frankly I think you cause more suffering of animals than you solve. "She was right, but at the wrong time." Stardate: 3134.0.
