So many people these days seem to be afflicted by mental disorders. Question: What was depression called in the ancient times? Answer: A bad day and then you got over that shit and kept on surviving.
Some people with depressive disorders are lucky and survive. Surviving however is not living a healthy life. Therefore people give these disorders the respect they deserve as true medical conditions and treat them accordingly just as you would treat a broken arm or leg. The brain can also be damaged and will need to heal. In "ancient times" all areas of healthcare were inferior to what we have today. All it proves is advances in our understanding Many mentally healthy people assume these disorders are just like what they have when they "have a bad day". This confusion arises from the overuse of words such as "depressed". Depression is an actual measurable chemical change in the brain. These do range from mild to severe (life threatening) just as other injuries do, but all people suffering deserve the respect of informed support rather than the ignorant mentally healthy telling them to "get over it", which actually is dangerous for them. People say these things jokingly and in all innocence (I suspect this was aiming to be humourous) but I'd advise not coming out with them around someone with a serious mental disorder, it wouldn't end well
Depression has nothing to do with a bad day. it is not being sad. And you do not understand what depression in fact is you are too ignorant to argue on this subject in a meaningful way. You may have useful knowledge in many other areas, I dunno, but in this one, you've got no idea.
Despressive disorders often lead to suicide. They can cause physical health difficulties aswell. It's rare for depression alone to do it (but can do with certain circumstances and personalities) but a lot of more serious disorders that include depression as a major component can lead to suicide unfortunately
Severe depression can exacerbate seizure disorders, or cause seizures if they're severe enough, seizures can be fatal. so, depression can kill you in a more direct way too.
Dave you seem to know alot about depression, but you seem to call out people like me in my other thread about how i don't know what depression is. Ok mabey I diddn't use it in it's "clinical" term, I'm not actually a "depressed" person but i still like to use that word in my life when i know i am feeling shitty. You can't say i don't know what depressed is, i remember being depressed in my childhood, just feeling like you are insignificant and everything is not only boring but it feels like you are a slave to life itself. I just kept living, because i figured since this is as low as my mood can get, life can't get anything but better! i Just thought it out logically. Once i tried marijuana, being depressed just diddn't even make sense because everything started having meaning to it. Then after a couple years, i diddn't get depressed, but things started getting more boring, so i tried LSD, then now, its like i'm living in heaven every day. So i think depressed people just need the drug that is right for them, and/or they need to find something in this world that they like to do. It can be anything the human body has so much potential and theres so many things to be done just go and do it.
That sounds a bit more serious than just plain old depression. Are you sure there isn't some disorder out there that includes both of those things?
it needs to only be used in the clinical sense because if not you get ignorance like the OP is spewing and magnetic headache. depression is depression. at least if you are using the term for what it is meant for. a lot of people who are depressed have a really hard time realizing it\seeking help because of the stigma. that's dangerous, and tragic.
I think it is very interesting how defensive and angry people get if you do not believe in thier mental problems. I am called ignorant. Funy because I am very far from it. I once told a kid who had been taking ridalin his whole life that I did not believe in ADD or ADHD and he fucking lost it. You see I have challenged thier view of reality which in a sense is thier security. Another thing I think is worth pointing out is that humans are only depressed now because they have time to be depressed. In ancient times a person with these types of disorders would have perished. Vanished from existence. Just because you have societies to support you while you convince yourself you are crazy does not mean you have some disease of the mind. It means you have a weak mind, yes. Diseased, no. Pull Yourselves Together and stop getting pissed off at people who do not follow the psychological teachings that have gotten you into the situation you are in today.
fuck em all.. .. :hat: One thing that been a fact in people that have depression,. They dont eat correctly. These cats are munching on mcdonalds 3 times a week, drinking alcohol, smoking dope, using all kinda of odd medications, dont sleep right.. Then they check themselfs in a hospital where its a institutional setting, after a few days they feel better? WHY, cause they ate breakfast, lunch, dinner, Real MEALS, sleep, stabilize their medications cause the meds are passed out at a specfic time. (not when the patient feels like taking it *like at home:toetap05 . they interact with people, attend groups and talk. As soon as they are discharged they get home and this is not what their lives will be like.. #1. I guarantee they dont eat breakfast, #2. they probably have alot of catching up to do with their petty lives, stay awake and watch tv all night, do illegal drugs, drink.. lalallalalallalala. And their depression returns in a few days.. Dave_techie has a real medical illness, he cant help but be depressed,, I wouldnt argue his case. I think hes mad cause this is how they treat him, and hes not in the duel-diagnosed category.. he has physical health problems, not those created by his own madness, like some people..
1. you need to learn to format. 2. You are ignorant. though ADD and ADHD are overdiagnosed, they are real, depression is also overdiagnosed, in part due to misconceptions regarding it's very nature. 3. You are also ignorant in your belief that I am being defensive. it is simply that I am telling you that you are wrong, and you lack the knowledge to form a cogent argument (as you have as yet failed to do) You are simply making claims about the other people in the thread (defensive, afraid, etc.) who do not agree with you Present numbers (as it is you who have made the claim, and thus bear the burden of proof) or drop it. Or make a clown of yourself with your personal attacks and politicking. (I should note, commenting on your ignorance of depression isn't an insult, it is simply a fact, just as if I were to say that skip is a webmaster, or that a mallard is a duck)
I strongly disagree with you as to causes I think you are drawing economic correlations to meet your own agenda\perspective.
I figured thats what you would say... bout as predictable as you are depressed.. exactly what might that agenda be? ridding the world of the weak and unable? would mental heath care be better if you had to pay for it yourself, what if patients are monitored more closely and then cut loss when they fail to follow a prescriptive customize monitoring plan.. If you get food stamps and sell them for some crack, dont come cry to the hospital your depressed or hearing voices, how many times the system need to create a treatment plan for the inept ? .. theres more pleople playing a silly "Im sick in the head game" cutting funding for those that are really sick in the head from getting proper treatment..
The thing is, you're calling a symptom the cause. it's like people who call stress the cause of depression (sally has a stressful job, and a stressful life, so she gets overloaded and becomes depressed) are doing the same thing the reason sally is working so hard to work so hard to have that high intensity "stressful" job, and that full schedule, overburdened stressful life, is that she's trying to drown out the symptoms of her depression. she is compensating, and when she rapidly decompensates, she becomes diagnosably depressed. Just as your sample (lets call him diabetic bill) Diabetic bill is trying to compensate by distracting himself, he isn't taking care of himself because he doesn't think he's worth it. I've already stated elsewhere that I believe depression may be a culling\winnowing\evolutionary process (which is actually incongruous with other evolutionary processes in a lot of ways, but it's incredibly elegant, that's why I like it) But to suggest that these behaviours CAUSE depression is short sighted. and demonstrates a lack of understanding how the problem works on a larger scale. Cutters aren't cutting because they want to die, they cut because they want to feel something. ANYTHING other than the terrible leeching hollowness that is a lot of what defines depression. Cutting doesn't cause depression. but if one were to use the same logical system as you are, one might believe it did. btw; you only knocked off 2 points of rep.... I am unworried
