American v British English..??

Inspired by a recent visit to an American coffee bar in central London this week, and a really embarrassiing misunderstanding because of Language..i mean...when i order a small white coffee and end up drinking a short white americano it got me thinking about the differences between American and British English...language and culture...

As it happens i take coffee drinking very seriously...but most Brits dont...they are just as happy opening a jar of instant... now i know that to most Americans this would be like drinking a mug of toxic waste.... then again you drink your beer straight from the bottle and eat chips...sorry fries with your fingers....drive on the wrong side of the road... men wear pants and hold them up with suspenders...lol.... very odd.!

 

okay...chillax...get yourself a cup of tea and scones and chillax gal...

 

oh lol...i forgot about tea...something drunk hot with milk in the UK....

 

or come to holland and drink some GOOD coffee with me

In fairness to all Brits...they are begining to appreciate coffee more... but then thats because most coffee bars are run on an American theme.... whats it like in Holland..are your fast food outlets influenced by America?

 

No..i dont drink tea at all....but i think Americans drink it iced no milk

burger king.
that's it.
oh yeah, and
vegetarian fastfood, maoz

coffee bars now thats just very dutch, goooooood coffee, not much you don't get a great big mug of coffee but you get strong coffee and they expect you to order it about three times.

drinking tea here well thats like...you walk into a place you order tea and than they say...no coffee?! you say, no, tea, they ask, what kinda tea you want, than you finished your tea and they come up to you and ask,
do you want some coffee?

 

Tea isnt drunk out much here either.... the quaint old fashioned tea rooms have been replaced by coffee shops... much more of an American influence than a European one...

Another notable difference is drive-throughs.... here in the UK thats confined to Burger King and MacDonalds.... in the US its drive throughs for everything from ATM's to dry cleaners... and to me a rubber is something i erase a mistake with...!!!

I suppose we should respect the history and let things just be. I mean if yer going to good coffee place, you will get good coffe anyway.. depends just on the place yer walking in, right?

We have more drive-throughs because everyone in this damn country has a car. Which is also why we scream the loudest when fuel prices rise to one-half what you Europeans pay. Stupid petrol dependency...

russians drink black tea with milk as well, couse to make the tea lighter to the stomach. Estonians dont drink that much tea (or dont blow the thingy to the public like this) but russians prefer usually tea than coffee

 

In the US a rubber is something I use to PREVENT a mistake before it even happens...

 

in uk rubber = gum

no but seriously i don't see where this thread is going....i understand neither americans nor british....but i understand the british more as i happen to be living in england atm....

 

Well us English people were speaking English first, so therefore our version is the correct version

 

ok, I feel a bit silly but what is a "small white coffee"?

and I usually drink my tea with a little cream in it, milk weakens it too much for me. Or else I have honey, if it's an herbal tea
