Does any TV buffs out there like this one?? I have to admit I find myself totally taken over by this one, too many real issues and values, things like this show trys to express are to this day kinda scary.....
still? isnt it only in its 2nd season? Yeah, i'm hooked to it! But, i wonder what future the show has...you can only watch so much vietnam protesting.
Sometimes I watch it, but I'm not a big fan of it. In one episode, Meg was in an underground cafe place & an "undiscovered" Janis Joplin was performing. Meg was like "ew, is she supposed to sing like that??" ...I just sat there with a weirdly shocked expression on my face for 7 minutes. ::sigh:: Britney Snow's aunt & uncle live next to my grampa. My aunt met her during her General Hospital days. I really don't like her & I have my reasons, but it's too outrageous to explain.
Who was she on GH? Now that you say that I kind of vaguely remember her. Hey, about the Janis thing, there are people today that don't think she's much more than an over-glorified screech owl. I am certainly not one of them, I'm an over-glorifier myself. But certainly when she started on the scene she was not embrace-able. Acid Rock/ blues fusion was still a very early form, finding it's footing, and women fronting rock bands were rare to say the least. Her character probably would say something like that, Janis is a far cry from Connie Francis. As for the show, I think it's a good little drama at a particularly relevant time. I hope it does well, I think it's pretty strong. I like shows with heart.
I could be wrong (and I probably am) but is the girl who plays Meg on American Dreams the same girl who plays Caroline on That 70's Show?
Nah...I'm pretty sure they're 2 different ppl. But now that you mention it, they look very similar to each other. Whoa...
I felt creepy watching it. So much time is spent on the missing son in Vietnam, and the theme of sacrifice for one's country. I don't think the anti-war protestors are presented in a positive light. They lurk in the shadows, like pimps, tempting the good daughter to disobey Noble Dad and Mom. The actress from Melrose Place (Daphne Z ... ?) played a single Mom, I think. And I didn't spot her in the last episode. She was the only adult who seemed unconventional. Has she left the show? Dick Clark produces the show, according to the credits. I don't want to anatagonize people who like the show, but it seems to be the Fifties revenge on the Sixities.
cheev, that's a really interesting reading...and being a casual watcher I see your point. It is interesting though, because in a lot of ways they avoid a lot of the demonization you get from dramas of a more modern time period. You can get away with portraying characters as more socially deviant without persecuting them for their actions.
if the producers were to show and tell everything it would be more like a 2hr movies a few times a week, i think they do a fair to good job of showing some of the agravation that was going on alomg with the some special moments in a family , they tend to let our own minds play out alot and this is also kinda cool.
Well believe it or not, the vietnam war was at one point in our history a POPULAR war. Everyone supported it, no questions asked. Remember, this is EARLY in the war.
well you may be right about the war being popular to some extent , but it also caused much unrest and grief as any war or (police action does), this show is about so much more than the war ......
Megara ... thanks for letting me know it's early in the War. You're right, until late 65' and early 66', there were few protests. Except for Berkeley and the SDS (hurrah for them). BUT ... I just get the feeling that the tone of the show is: we're normal and we are going thru a weird time in our country, and let's hope our family stays normal. Which is ok because many families really did feel that way. But it makes the Hippies the OUTSIDERS. I prefer the miniseries a few years back called "The Sixties." It told the story of one family that's white, and one family that's black (hmm, sounds like this show). The black family experiences Civil Rights and the white family experiences Vietnam. A three part miniseries, I believe. And thanks for the kind comments KosmicBlues. Why don't they turn on the lights in this show?
