Am I the only musician here...

...who DOESN'T play the guitar?

Just wondering.

 

sup brotha, not sure what your gettin at, but... I played coronet for 5 years, was musically trained, and now I play the electric bass... but I have a really jazz bassed style of course... that would be tight to jam with a bad ass sax player! hard for me to jam with people though... kinda picky with my musicians, I like to play with really creative sounds.

 

What am I getting at? It's just that there's an awful lot of chat about guitars, guitarist and guitarist heroes and I just wanted to see if anybody would like to talk about something other than guitars for a change. Nothing against guitars, just there's got to be more to life and there've got to be people who'd talk about other instruments and other styles of music.

no, but seriously i know what you mean, lots of talk of guitars, to be honest i dont think in all my time here at the hip forums have i heard about drummers!

Lotta guitarists, I agree. But that's because the guitar is an amazing instrument in terms of versatility (and don't forget portability). It's no wonder that it dominates contemporary music, imo. Note: this is an unbiased opinion, because I'm not a guitarist. I play the electric glockenschtucher.

 

So can I take some assurances here that you lot are content to talk about music other than that which revolves around the guitar then? That's a big relief!

I dont read sheet music at all anymore, every beat I make, groove I find my way into, its all things I have to listen for ya know? then it just starts happening, a bad ass groove starts kickin

 

and thank you, _see_, for getting the name right! You'd be amazed at the number of people who don't see those Ns.

 

Sheet music, for those who read, can help shave off many iterations of coming to get a song. After one gets the song, well, then you fly! A lot get trapped into the sameness of sheet music and never expand beyond it. That's a shame. That sheet contains an idea trapped in a moment of time. So many other things it can turn into with intuition, understanding, and a willingness to explore and push at the envelope.
