Today I was writing my friend a letter and the moment I looked at the paper and read her last letter my eyes felt really strained behind the eyeball.. it didn't hurt so much as feel really achey. When I shut my eyes it didn't feel much better. Anyway, I kept writing but it just really felt so strained, almost like a headache, and I've had it since then. It didn't feel nearly as bad when I looked across the room rather than at the paper. It's happened a few times before but not often, maybe once or twice, and I've still got it even though I stopped writing, had a lie down, etc.. I'm 18!! This shouldn't be happening!! I could still read the paper fine, seeing things was no problem, it just ached to do it.. My dad has bad sight but I'm pretty sure it was mainly as a result of a childhood accident, noone else bar my grandparents have ever had eyesight problems. I've asked at the doctors once but it wasn't happening at the time, and my eyesight has always been good, so the doctor didn't really bother with it..

Does anyone know what's going on?

If your Doc won't take you seriously/check it out, go see another Doc.

It could still be a vision thing... I used to get headaches like that, long before I actually started having trouble seeing. It turned out that the muscles in my eyes were compensating for the trouble I didn't even realize I was having  Next time it happens, do what you can to go to the doctor - your eye doctor, if possible.

What she said, I had the same sort of trouble. Then I went back on driving lessons, aand found I couldn't read the numberplat from 3 car lengths away. I had an eye exam, got a new pair of glasses...and was shocked by how bad my eyesight had been. My exact words were 'Oh bloody hell'.

Yep, sounds like eyestrain, especially since you said it feels better to look across the room. Try reading less, or take breaks, looking into the distance more often. Still, you may need glasses, which would help quite a bit.

I didn't either, but once you put them on, you realize how much better it is. My problem was seeing in the distance, and though I don't wear them usually (just for driving or when I need better distance vision, like at a movie or something), they really do make a big difference.
